Men's Lacrosse Falls to Salem State, 10-6

MILTON, Mass. – Salem State won their fourth straight game as they defeated Curry College 10-6 on Wednesday afternoon. In the loss, the Colonels fell to 5-1, while the Vikings improve to 4-0 overall.

Sophomores Jon Castellano (Scarsdale, N.Y.) and Ronald Jensen (Zionsville, Ind.) led with three points apiece on one goal and two assists for Curry.  Freshman Ben Melaugh (Billerica, Mass.) earned four points on three goals and one assist to lead Salem State.

The Vikings opened the scoring as senior Kyle Dolan (North Andover, Mass.) netted his first shot attempt of the game off an assist from sophomore Matt Whited (Falmouth, Mass.). The Colonels answered back just two minutes later when senior Joseph Natale tallied an unassisted goal.  Salem was able to regain their lead before the end of the first quarter with 1:06 showing on the clock.  Freshman Bobby Bourgeois (Billerica, Mass.) received a pass from sophomore Max Gansenberg (Beverly, Mass.) that soared past the stick of the Colonel’s freshman netminder, Timothy McNair (Wilmette, Ill.).

The second frame saw just one goal scored.  Jensen netted an unassisted goal at the 4:50 mark to tie the game at two.  McNair played solid between the pipes to hold the Vikings scoreless. 

Salem outscored Curry 4-1 in the third to increase their lead to 6-3.  The Vikings got on the board first on an unassisted Dolan tally.  The Colonels tied the game once again, but that would be the last time.  Senior Andrew Navoni received a quick pass from Castellano and one-timed it into the bottom left corner of the net past Salem’s freshman goaltender Dylan Svenson (Billerica, Mass.).  The Vikings went on to score the next three in 3:43 minutes. Bourgeois netted his second of the game unassisted.  Whited earned one off an assist from freshman Ben Melaugh (Billerica, Mass.).  Melaugh finished off the scoring with an assist from junior Frank Lento (Salem, Mass.)

In the closing 15 minutes of play, the teams combined for seven goals.  Four came off the stick of Salem and three from Curry.  The Vikings scored the first two and the Colonels netted three back-to-back to cut Salem’s lead to two for a 8-6 game.  The Vikings however got two more tallies to finish the period and earn the 10-6 victory.  For Salem, Lento and Dolan each had one while Melaugh netted the last two, the final with just 12 seconds remaining in regulation.  The Colonels Castellano had one goal and one assist and Natale and sophomore Connor McKeon (Larchmont, N.Y.) tallied one apiece.  Jensen chipped in with two assists on Curry’s final scores. 

McNair made 15 saves in goal in his first loss of the season for Curry.  Svenson made 10 saves in the victory in net for Salem.

Curry travels to Anna Maria on Saturday, March 23 for a 12:00 p.m. game start.  Salem hosts Salve Regina on Saturday, March 23 in a 1:00 p.m. game time.
