Hockey Races By Seahawks; Jansson Nets Hat Trick

PORTSMOUTH, R.I. – The Curry College men's ice hockey team completed the home-and-home sweep of Salve Regina University with a 9-1 victory in Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) play on Saturday night at the Portsmouth Abbey Ice Rink.

The Colonels grabbed the advantage in the first period by adding two tallies. Junior Viktor Jansson (Stockholm, Sweden) netted both goals, one 3:15 in and the other on the power play with one second left in the frame.

Curry kept its foot on the gas pedal in the second as they outscored the Seahawks, 4-1. Jansson finished off a hat trick when he found the back of the net 19 seconds in. Sophomores Mic Curran (Arlington, Mass.) and Alex Ochterbeck (Dallas, Texas) picked up the assists. Freshman Mark Zhukov (St. Petersburg, Russia) followed with a goal coming from senior Billy Vizzo (Shelton, Conn.). The Seahawks broke up the run with a finish by senior Nick Holt (Pembroke, Mass.) with 14:30 remaining. The Colonels scored back-to-back power play goals to close the frame. Junior Eetu Selanne (Coto de Caza, Calif.) put a shot in the back of the net with the helper going to senior captain Jordan Williamson (Okotoks, Alberta). Freshman Austin Whelan (Richmond Hill, Ontario) netted his third goal of the season, his first on the power play with 1:41 left. Ochterbeck and sophomore Nick Magill-Diaz (Troy, Mich.) set up the score with the helpers.

Curry finished the game with three more markers. Williamson, freshman Nicholas Favaro (Vaughn, Ontario), and senior Anthony Trujillo (Toronto, Ontario) all tallied goals in the third as the contest ended in a 9-1 final.

The Colonels closed the contest with a 38-31 edge in shots. Curry went 3-for-6 on the power play while Salve Regina was 0-for-4.

Senior Justin Ketola (Cloquet, Minn.) had 30 saves in the win while sophomore Louis-Felix St. Jean (St. Bruno, Quebec) was credited with the loss, making 13 stops.

Curry (16-4-3 overall, 11-3-2 CCC) will travel to Nichols College for its regular-season road finale on Friday, February 21. Puck drop is set for 6:40 p.m. Salve Regina (12-10-1 overall, 8-7-1 CCC) heads to Everett, Mass. to take on the Wentworth Institute of Technology on Saturday, February 22 at 4:00 p.m.
