No. 8 Nor'easters Edge Hockey in CCC Clash

CANTON, Mass. – The Curry College men's ice hockey team surrendered three goals in the third period to the visiting No. 8 University of New England as the Nor'easters came out victorious in a 6-4 final in a Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) clash on Saturday afternoon at the Canton Ice House.

The Colonels got on the board first after a goal by junior Michael Snow (Medford, Mass.) with 4:17 elapsed in the opening period. Junior Joseph Thielen (Huntington Beach, Calif.) and freshman Mark Zhukov (St. Petersburg, Russia) were credited with the assists. The Nor'easters struck back 27 seconds later on a marker from senior Ryan Bloom (Northville, Mich.). Curry netted the final goal of the stanza on the sixth of the year from sophomore Nick Magill-Diaz (Troy, Mich.) with 9:05 to go. Junior Viktor Jansson (Stockholm, Sweden) and sophomore Mic Curran (Arlington, Mass.) picked up the helpers as the Colonels went into the first intermission with a 2-1 lead.

Curry increased the score to 3-1 following another tally by Magill-Diaz, this time coming on the power play 3:19 into the frame. UNE found the back of the net for two straight goals, one from senior Dimitris Jones (Seattle, Wash.) and the other from junior Brett Mecrones (Medford, Mass.) as Nor'easters pulled even 3-3 after two.

The Colonels regained the lead with 15:42 left in regulation on a goal by sophomore Alex Ochterbeck (Dallas, Texas). Curran and sophomore Vilhelm Peltonen (Helsinki, Finland) notched the assists. The Nor'easters leveled the contest a little over three minutes later on a marker by freshman Alex Sheehy (North Salem, N.Y.). Sophomore Jimmy Elser (Verbank, N.Y.) put a shot past senior goaltender Justin Ketola (Cloquet, Minn.), which turned out to be the game-winner with 8:46 to play. The visitors tacked on an empty-net goal with 38 seconds left on a score by junior Chris Jones (Seattle, Wash.) for the 6-4 final.

Curry went 1-for-3 on the power play while UNE was 0-for-2. The Nor'easters had 40 shots compared to 31 for the Colonels.

Junior goaltender Ben Churchfield (Newcastle, England) made 27 stops in the UNE victory. Ketola had 34 saves for Curry in the loss.

Curry (12-4-3 overall, 7-3-2 CCC) opens a home-and-home series with Western New England University on Saturday, February 7 at the Canton Ice House. Puck drop is scheduled for 6:50 p.m. The University of New England (14-3-2 overall, 10-1-1 CCC) travels to Nichols College for the first half of a home-and-home on Friday at Levy Rink in Burrillville, R.I. at 6:40 p.m.
