Hockey Extends Win Streak To Five, Completes Season Sweep of Golden Bears

WEST SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – The Curry College men's ice hockey team defeated Western New England University, 5-1, in Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) action on Saturday night at the Olympia Ice Center. With the win, the Colonels improve to 15-6-3 overall and 10-4-2 in the CCC while the loss drops the Golden Bears to 7-17-0 overall and 2-14-0 in league play.

Western New England snagged the early lead in the first period as senior Tyler Hines (North Haven, Conn.) lit the lamp for a power-play goal 3:36 into the contest. The assists on the opening marker were awarded to seniors Eddie Rogers (St. Louis, Mo.) and Carlos Ross (Brockport, N.Y.). Senior goaltender Kevin Gollmer (Flourtown, Pa.) preserved the clean sheet in the first stanza, turning away 16 Curry shots.

The Colonels used two goals in the second period to take the 2-1 advantage. Freshman Mike Pellegrini (Markham, Ontario) registered his second goal of the season with 14:26 left in the frame. Sophomore Kasper Kjellkvist (Vaxjo, Sweden) followed with his seventh goal of the season 7:29 into the period. The assist on the goal went to sophomore Matthew Henderson (Scarborough, Maine). Curry held a staggering 27-2 lead in shots in the stanza.

The Colonels added to its lead in the third, thanks to two goals from senior captain Zach White (Milford, Conn.) and one from freshman Tarek Paranica (Grand Forks, N.D.). White net a shorthanded goal 55 seconds into the final period and added another with 13:44 left to extend the Curry lead to 4-1. Paranica tallied the last goal of the contest with 2:35 remaining in regulation to make the score 5-1. White picked up the helper on the marker.

Curry went 0-for-4 on power plays while Western New England was 1-for-5. The Colonels had 52 shots while the Golden Bears had 20.

Freshman goaltender Vladimir Cibulka (Bratislava, Slovakia) converted 19 saves in the victory for Curry. Gollmer made an impressive 47 saves in net for Western New England in the loss.

Curry closes out the regular season on Saturday, February 16 when they travel to Becker for a 6:10 p.m. start.
