UMass Dartmouth Pulls Away From Hockey in Third Period, Tops Curry, 7-3

NEW BEDFORD, Mass. – The Curry College men's ice hockey team suffered a 7-3 loss to UMass Dartmouth in non-conference play on Tuesday night at Hetland Arena. The win improves the Corsairs to 2-4-0 while the loss drops the Colonels to 3-4-2 overall.

UMass Dartmouth was first to get on the scoreboard just 2:26 into the contest. Jimmy Pelton (Syracuse, N.Y.) got the Corsairs on the board with a marker off an assist from Dillon Radin (Long Beach, N.Y.). A minute and a half later, Curry answered back with a goal of their own as Zach White (Milford, Conn.) found the back of the net with the assist going to Michael Snow (Medford, Mass.). The Colonels held a 9-7 advantage in shots at the end of the opening period.

Four total goals were scored in the second frame, three from UMass Dartmouth and one from Curry.  The Corsairs took a 2-1 advantage when they netted one at 6:36. Steven Leonard (Rockaway Park, N.Y.) tallied an unassisted marker for the first goal of the period. The Colonels answered back just 33 seconds later as Snow put a shot past Tommy Bay (Duluth, Ga.). The helper on the goal went to Lionel Mauron (Lausanne, Switzerland). UMass Dartmouth added two goals in the final eight minutes of the period to grab a 4-2 lead at the end of two frames. Leonard added a power-play goal with the assist going to Jonathan Ruiz (Williamstown, N.J.) with 7:18 remaining and then Ruiz got in the scoring action with an unassisted tally with 4:30 to go in the stanza.  

The Colonels put up their final goal 2:39 into the third period as Mauron put a shot past Bay to cut the deficit to 4-3, a goal of which was of the power-play variety. The assists on the goal were awarded to Joseph Thielen (Huntington Beach, Calif.) and White. However, the Corsairs responded with three straight goals to close the game out strong. Ruiz netted a shorthanded goal off a pass from Connor Court (Swansea) 11 seconds after Mauron's marker. Brendan McDonough (Wilmington, Mass.) scored the final two goals for the home squad to give UMass Dartmouth the victory.

The Corsairs outshot the Colonels, 25-17. Curry was 1-for-4 on the PP while UMD was 2-for-4.

Vladimir Cibulka (Bratislava, Slovakia) recorded 11 saves in net taking the loss. Bay made 14 stops in net in the win.

Curry is next in action when they host CCC opponent Western New England on Friday November 30 at 6:50 p.m. UMass Dartmouth takes on Fredonia in opening round play of the 2018 Southern New Hampshire/PAL Stovepipe Tournament on Saturday afternoon in Hooksett, N.H. that starts at 4:40 p.m.
