Hockey Topped By UNE in League Play, 6-2

BIDDEFORD, Maine – The Curry College men's hockey team lost to eighth-ranked University of New England, 6-2, in Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) action on Saturday evening at the Harold Alfond Forum.

The loss drops the Colonels to 3-3-2 overall and 2-3-1 in conference play.  With the win, the Nor'easters improve to 5-1-0 overall with an identical record in league play.

Four total goals were scored between the two teams in the opening 20 minutes of play.  Curry was first to get on the board 3:10 into the contest after Anthony Trujillo (Toronto, Ontario) sent the puck past UNE's goaltender Ben Churchfield (Newcastle, England). Trujillo was assisted by Jordan Williamson (Okotoks, AB) and Kasper Kjellkvist (Vaxjo, Sweden).  The Nor'easters got on the board just over three minutes later as Ryan Bloom (Northville, Mich.) tacked on a power-play goal with the assists going to Brady Fleurent (Biddeford, Maine) and Dimitris Jones (Seattle, Wash.) at the 6:59 mark to knot the game at one. UNE netted its second consecutive power-play goal 9:41 into the period. Dylan Bengston (Coral Springs, Fla.) found the back of the net for his second tally of the season. The helpers on the goal were awarded to Justin Dixson (Sunnyvale, Calif.) and Brett Mecrones (Medford, Mass.).

The Nor'easters outscored the Colonels 2-1 in the second period as UNE extended its lead to 5-2. 14:13 into the frame, Derek Mecrones (Medford, Mass.) registered his second goal of the season, this one on the power-play. The assists on the goal went to Dixson and B. Mecrones. Three minutes later, Zach White (Milford, Conn.) answered with a power-play marker of his own. Assists on the goal went to Lionel Mauron (Lausanne, Switzerland) and Joseph Thielen (Huntington Beach, Calif.). Just 18 seconds later, UNE put another goal in with the marker going to Austin Morgan (Novi, Mich.) and the assists to Tyler Seltenreich (Littleton, Colo.) and Jeff Eppright (Barrington, N.J.).

Aaron Aragon (Whittier, Calif.) recorded the final goal for the Nor'easters 17:29 into the third period for the 6-2 final.

The Colonels went 1-for-5 on power-plays while UNE was 3-for-6.

Cody Murch (Raleigh, N.C.) registered 30 saves in the loss for the Colonels. Churchfield made 18 stops in the win for UNE.

Curry will next play at UMass Dartmouth on Tuesday, November 20 at 7:30 p.m. The University of New England hosts Bowdoin on Tuesday at 7:00 p.m. for its next contest.
