Hockey Outlasts CCC Foe Wentworth, 4-2

MILTON, Mass. --- The Curry College men's ice hockey team defeated visiting Wentworth, 4-2, on Friday night at the Max Ulin Rink in Milton. With the win the Colonels improve to 16-7-1 overall and 10-7-1 in the Commonwealth Coast Conference while the loss drops the Leopards to 9-12-3 on the season and 7-7-3 against conference opponents.

The Colonels were first to get on the board as they took an early lead just 2:45 into the first period.  Freshman Matthew Henderson (Scarborough, Maine) one-timed a shot that sailed over the shoulder of Wentworth's senior netminder Ryan Hubbard (West Roxbury, Mass.). Henderson was assisted by sophomore Anthony Trujillo (Toronto, Ontario) and senior Jarret Kup (Rosseau, Ontario).  The Leopards tied the game midway through at 10:35 off a slap shot from senior Jake McDonough (Marshfield, Mass.).  Sophomore Adam Tracey (Sleepy Hollow, N.Y.) earned the helper.  The Colonels regained the lead with less than two minutes to play to head into intermission with a 2-1 score.  Junior Lionel Mauron (Lausanne, Switzerland) sent Kup the puck and he fired it into the back of the cage.  Freshman Mike Snow (Medford, Mass.) had the secondary assist. The goal was scored on a power-play opportunity.  Curry held a huge advantage in shots at 13-3.

The teams traded goals in the second with the Colonels striking first.  After a two-minute penalty call on the Leopards, Curry was able to capitalize on the man-up situation.  Trujillo maneuvered the puck past Hubbard with assists credited to seniors Shane Tracy (Bow, N.H.) and Adam Valadao (Ajax, Ontario).  Wentworth answered back just 14 seconds later for their final score on the night.  Sophomore CJ Grinnell (Burlington, Mass.) received the puck from classmate Nate Chase (Plainfield, Ill.) and fired it past the glove of the Colonels freshman netminder Cody Murch (Raleigh, N.C.).  Shots after the second were in favor of the Leopards, 7-6.

Curry's fourth tally came with only 1:26 showing on the game clock in regulation. The Colonels netted their third power-play goal off the stick of Snow.  Kup earned the assist to finish the night with three points.

The Colonels outshot the Leopards, 27-20. Curry was 3-7 on the PP while Wentworth was 0-5.

Murch recorded 18 saves in net for the win.  Hubbard made 23 stops in net taking the loss.

The teams will face each other again tomorrow at Wentworth in a 3:00 p.m. game start.
