Hockey Downs Johnson & Wales, 6-3

MILTON, Mass. --- The Curry College men's ice hockey team defeated visiting Johnson & Wales University, 6-3, on Saturday evening at the Max Ulin Rink in Milton. With the win the Colonels improve to 5-4-1 overall and 4-3-1 in the Commonwealth Coast Conference while the loss drops the Wildcats to 4-8 on the season and 3-5 against conference opponents.

Curry got four-point efforts from seniors Adam Valadao (Ajax, Ontario) and Shane Tracy (Bow, N.H.).  Valadao chipped in four assists while Tracy netted two and helped on two.  Freshman Kasper Kjellkvist (Vaxjo, Sweden) had three points on the night with two tallies and an assist.

JWU was first to get on the board 4:02 into the first period.  Junior Ryan Sete (Jackson, Mich.) intercepted a Colonel pass near the center of the ice and went one-on-one with Curry's freshman netminder Frank Cundiff (Oceanside, N.Y.).  Sete maneuvered the puck past the glove of Cundiff for the unassisted score.  The Colonels answered back just two minutes later on Kjellkvists first goal of the game with assists credited to Tracy and Valadao.  Curry took a one-goal lead late in the period to head into intermission up 2-1.  The Colonels took advantage of a power play opportunity as freshman Brandon Zajicek (Albertville, Minn.) took a slap shot over the shoulder of the Wildcat's freshman netminder Mike Rockwell (Poughquag, N.Y.). Zajicek was helped by Valadao and junior Mack Heisinger (Winnipeg, Manitoba).  The Colonels held the advantage in shots at 14-10.

It took only 45 seconds into the second frame for Curry to put another score up on the board.  Junior Lionel Mauron (Lausanne, Switzerland) one-timed the puck into the back of the net with help from sophomores Jordan Williamson (Okotoks, AB) and Alec Mono (Las Vegas, Nev.).  Tracy earned the eventual game-winner five minutes later when he collected a pass just outside the crease and tipped it in. Valadao and Kjellkvist were credited with the assists.  JWU capitalized on a power-play situation for their second tally on the night at the 7:49 minute mark.  Junior Chad Guderian (Coppell, Tx.) took a slap shot just over the blueline that sailed past Cundiff. Guderian was assisted by classmate Mike Rodriguez (Bronxville, N.Y.) and Sete.  The Colonels responded 30 seconds later on another Kjellkvist goal.  Valadao won the ensuing face-off and sent the puck to Heisinger who found an open Kjellkvist in front of the net. Curry held a slight lead in shots at 9-7.

The teams exchanged goals in the final stanza with Curry striking first. The Colonels went up 6-2 at the 7:17 minute mark.  Tracy earned his second tally off Valadao's game-high fourth assist.  Senior Jarret Kup (Rosseau, Ontario) got the secondary helper.  JWU was able to put up one more with just 45 seconds showing on the clock in regulation.  Senior Alan Boozer (Detroit, Mich.) scored his team's third when he got a stick on a loose puck and stuck it past Cundiff.  Boozer was helped by Junior Nicholas Pezza (Smithfield, R.I.) and freshman Jordan Stone (Parker, Colo.).

The Colonels outshot the Wildcats, 32-25. Curry was 1-4 on the PP while JWU was 1-1.

Cundiff recorded 22 saves in net for the win.  Rockwell made 26 stops in net taking the loss.

The Colonels are next in action when they host CCC opponent Nichols College on Friday, December 8 at 6:50 p.m.  The Wildcats also play on Friday when they travel to CCC opponent Endicott for a 7:00 p.m. start.
