Hockey Battles CCC Foe Western New England to a 2-2 Overtime Tie

MILTON, Mass. - The Curry College men's ice hockey team battled visiting Western New England to a 2-2 overtime tie on Friday night at the Max Ulin Rink. With the tie the Colonels move to 2-2-1 and 1-1-1 in the Commonwealth Coast Conference while the tie moves the Golden Bears to 2-1-1 and 1-1-1 in the CCC.

Curry took an early 1-0 lead to start the second after a scoreless first period.  With just 1:47 off the clock freshman Brandon Zajicek (Albertville, Minn.) netted his first collegiate goal off a pass from senior Adam Valadao (Ajax, Ont.) and junior Lionel Mauron (Lausanne, Switzerland).  Mauron gave the Colonels a 2-0 advantage just minutes later after he one-timed the puck past the glove of Western New England's junior goaltender Kevin Gollmer (Flourtown, Pa.).  Mauron was helped by Valadao and senior Shane Tracy (Bow, N.H.).  The lead didn't last long as the Golden Bears answered back with two of their own to even the contest. At the 9:53 minute mark senior Matt Audet (Campbell, Calif.) cut Western New England's deficit in half.  Classmate Matt Smethurst (Rexford, N.Y.) recorded his first of two assists on the night when he sent the pass to Audet for the tally.  Just 42 seconds later the Golden Bears notched the tying score on a power-play goal.   Junior Matt O'Dea (Orland Park, Ill.) netted the goal seven seconds in to the man-up situation.  O'Dea fired the puck over the shoulder of Curry's freshman netminder Frank Cundiff (Oceanside, N.Y.). He was assisted by Smethurst and freshman Nolan Zweep (Abbotsford, B.C.).

The Colonels outshot the Golden Bears, 41-25 and held a 50-33 advantage in the faceoff circle.  Western New England was 1-3 on the power-play while Curry went 0-3.

Cundiff made 23 saves in net for the Colonels and the Golden Bears Gollmer made an impressive 39 stops.
The teams will face each other again on Saturday, November 11 at Western New England in a 6:00 p.m. start.
