Hockey Tripped Up 7-3 at Becker in CCC Opener

WORCESTER, Mass. --- The Becker College men's ice hockey team won 7-4 against visiting Curry College on Thursday evening at the Fidelity Ice Center in Worcester. It was the Ice Hawks first home game in the new building. The Ice Hawks of Becker improve to 2-0-1 and 1-0 in Commonwealth Coast Conference competition while the Colonels of Curry fall to 1-2 and 0-1 against conference opponents.

In the first period, an early penalty proved costly for Becker as Curry was just seven seconds into a power play when senior forward Ryan Fitzgerald (Cary, N.C. / Connecticut Oilers, EHL) caught the keeper out of position and found the back of the net, assisted by junior center Zachery White (Milford, Conn. / New York Applecore, EHL). The Colonels went ahead 1-0.

The Ice Hawks were still trailing with 22 seconds to go in the first when they scored the equalizer off a power play, as Becker freshman forward Aaron Deady (East Greenwich, R.I. / Cape Cod Islanders) finished, assisted by senior forward John Dutney (Hudson, Mass. / The Winchendon School) and senior forward James Wallace (Levittown, Pa. / Philadelphia Revolution).

After a scoreless second period, Becker lit the light again 2:37 into the third when freshman forward John Tomkowiak (Lindenhurst, Ill. / Dells Ducks) scored the go-ahead goal, this coming once again off a power play. Assists went to senior forward Corey Sherman (Hilton, N.Y. / Syracuse Stars) and junior forward Brandon Morgan (Rochester, N.Y. / Syracuse Stars).

The Ice Hawks appeared to have put the game away with 5:36 left in the game, scoring on a short-handed goal as the Colonels failed to take advantage of a much-needed power play. Dutney scored unassisted to put Becker ahead 3-1.

But then momentum shifted. Curry scored on an even-strength goal just a minute later with White finishing, assisted by junior forward Lionel Mauron (Lausanne, Switzerland / Springfield Pics, USPHL). Then with 3:15 to go, White scored his second goal of the game, again even-strength, assisted by freshman forward Kasper Kjellkvist (Vaxjo, Sweden / Super Elite J20).

The game appeared headed for a tie, but Becker junior forward Corey Schafer (Johnstown, Pa. / Missoula Maulers) put away the eventual game-winner with 1:22 to go. After Curry pulled the keeper, the Ice Hawks scored two more goals in rapid succession, the first by Wallace and the second coming from junior forward Stephen Wolf (Somersworth, N.H. / New Hampshire Monarchs).

Wolf scored his second goal of the game even-strength with just 12 seconds remaining.

Dutney finished with one goal and three assists to emerge as the top point-earner for the Ice Hawks.

Becker sophomore goalie Grant Martens (Bloomington, Minn. / Helena Bighorns) recorded 41 saves in net while Curry freshman netminder Frank Cundiff (Oceanside, N.Y. / Springfield Pics, USPHL) tallied 22 stops. The Colonels outshot the Ice Hawks, 44-29.

Becker and Curry will meet again on Saturday when the Ice Hawks go on the road to face the Colonels in a 4:50 p.m. game. (Game Recap Courtesy of Becker Sports Information)
