Murphy Nets Game-Winner in Thrilling 3-2 Victory Over Becker College in CCC Action

MARLBORO, Mass. --- The Becker College men's ice hockey team lost 3-2 to visiting Curry College on Saturday night at the New England Sports Center in Marlboro, Mass.

The Ice Hawks of Becker (5-14, 4-8 CCC) got on the board first when senior forward Connor Merrick (Manchester, N.H. / NH Junior Monarchs) scored 11:16 into the first period, assisted by sophomore forward Corey Schafer (Johnstown, Pa. / Missoula Maulers) and junior forward Corey Sherman (Hilton, N.Y. / Syracuse Stars). It was Merrick's eighth goal of the season.

The Colonels of Curry (10-7-2, 7-3-2 CCC) got the equalizer 14:05 into the second on an unassisted goal from freshman defender Alec Mono (Las Vegas, Nev. / New Jersey Rockets, EHL).

In the third period, Sherman put Becker ahead once again, assisted by Merrick and Schafer 6:12 in. Just two minutes later, however, Curry senior forward Tyler Vankleef (Dundas, Ontario / Burlington Cougars, OJHL) tied it up again at 2-2.  Vankleef was assisted by senior forwards Jake Heisinger (Winnipeg, Manitoba/Winnipeg Blues, MJHL) and sophomore Lionel Mauron (Lausanne, Switzerland/Springfield Pics, USPHL).

Finally, with 40 seconds left and the game appeared heading into overtime, Curry senior forward James Murphy (Malden, Mass. / Governor's Academy) launched a shot that ricocheted off the crossbar and in for the game's final score.  Assists were credited to senior forward Sean Nelson (Brighton, Mich./Portland Jr. Pirates, EJHL) and junior forward Ryan Fitzgerald (Cary, N.C./Connecticut Oilers, EHL).

Becker senior goalie Tyler Stepke (Mars, Pa. / Three Rivers Vengeance) recorded 35 saves on the night while Curry senior goalie Brett Sinclair (St. Catharines, Ontario / Aurora Tigers, OJHL) earned the win with 32 stops.

Becker returns to the ice on Tuesday when they travel to Nichols College. The puck drops at 6:10 p.m. Curry plays next on Thursday when they travel to Western New England for a 7:10 p.m. game.  (Game Recap Courtesy of Becker Sports Information).
