Hockey Knocked Off at Cortland State, 5-2

CORTLAND, N.Y. - Junior Darren McCormick (Buffalo/Buffalo Jr. Sabres) scored three goals and added an assist to lead the Cortland men's hockey team to a come-from-behind, 5-2, victory versus Curry College Saturday afternoon in non-conference action at Alumni Arena.  With the win the Red Dragons improve to 8-7-1 on the season while the Colonels move to 8-6-1 overall.

Freshman Sean Perichak (Oakville, ON/Markham Royals) tallied one goal and two assists for the Red Dragons (8-7-1), and junior Drazen Zack (East Greenbush/Connecticut Oilers) contributed one goal and one assist. Junior Andrew McCann (Bowmanville, ON/Wellington Dukes) and freshmen Tony DeVito (Chicago, IL/New Jersey Titans) and Stefano Alonzi (Maple, ON/Burlington Cougars) each contributed one assist. Junior goalie Drew Weigman (Annapolis, MD/Northern Cyclones) registered 38 saves.

Sophomore Mack Heisinger (Winnipeg, MB/Winnipeg Blues) led the Colonels (8-6-1) with one goal and one assist. Junior Ryan Fitzgerald (Cary, NC/Connecticut Oilers) netted a goal, and senior Jake Heisinger (Winnipeg, MB/Winnipeg Blues), junior Phil Kiss (Burlington, ON/Georgetown Raiders) and sophomore Lionel Mauron (Lausanne, Switzerland/Springfield Pics) each chipped in with an assist. Sophomore goalie Spencer Cookson (Sheffield, MA/Berkshire School) made 22 saves and allowed three goals in 57:42, while Cortland added two empty-net scores.

Curry took a 2-0 lead just past the midway point of the second period before Cortland started its comeback. McCormick scored his first goal at 15:10 of the second on the power play, and Zack made it a 2-2 game with a power-play goal at 17:23.

Perichak netted the game-winner, also on the power play, at 6:57 of the third period on a deflection in front, and McCormick finished off the scoring with empty-net goals at 18:36 and 19:55, respectively, to complete the hat trick and raise his season goal total to 14.

The Colonels are next in action on Thursday, January 19 when they host Commonwealth Coast Conference opponent Nichols College at 6:45 p.m.
