Hockey Falls to Visiting ECAC Northeast Rival Johnson & Wales, 3-1

MILTON, Mass.- In an ECAC Northeast conference match-up in men's ice hockey action on Thursday evening at the Max Ulin Rink, Curry College lost to Johnson & Wales, 3-1.  With the loss, the Colonels fall to 9-9-2 overall and 2-6-1 in the conference.  The Wildcats improve to 13-8-1 overall and 6-4-0 in the conference.

Curry was first to get on the board in the opening period.  Johnson & Wales was called for a penalty with 37 seconds left to play.  The Colonels capitalized on the man-up situation and at the 19:53 minute mark took a one goal lead.   Junior Shane Harrington (Mansfield, Mass.) fired a shot that sailed past the glove of the Wildcat's sophomore netminder Joey Ballmer (Kalamazoo, Mich.).  Harrington's goal was unassisted.  Curry's sophomore goaltender Brett Sinclair (St. Catherines, Ontario) was solid between the pipes turning away seven shots.  The Colonels held a slight advantage in shots at 12-7.

Despite Curry outshooting Johnson & Wales 15-13 in the second frame, the Colonels couldn't find the back of the net.  Ballmar and the Wildcats defense played tough in their defensive zone against a feisty Curry offense.  Johnson & Wales offense came out strong netting back-to-back tallies with only two minutes off the clock.  The first came just over a minute into the period.  Sophomore Drew Kariofiles (Cincinnati, Ohio) took a slap shot past Sinclair to tie the game.  Senior Jason Healy (Goshen, N.Y.) and freshman Alan Boozer (Detroit, Mich.) were credited with the assists.  The Wildcats took the lead 42 seconds later and held onto it for the remainder of the game.  Sophomore JP Larmoyeux (West Palm Beach, FL.) scored the game-winner when he received the puck right in front of Sinclair.  Larmoyeux was assisted by senior Alex Porrier (Rutland, Vt.).

Both teams battles throughout the third with the Colonels trying to put up another on the board and the Wildcats working hard to keep their lead.  Curry had the advantage again in shots at 13-6 but Ballmer made all 13 stops.  Sinclair played solid for the Colonels turning away all six shots he faced.  It wasn't until the final 20 seconds that Johnson & Wales would tally their third of the night to secure the win.  With Sinclair on the bench the Wildcats scored an empty net goal off the stick of sophomore Ben Brouillard (Somerset, Mass.).  Kariofiles earned his second point on the night with the assist.  Junior Aaron Arm (Plantation, FL.) also was on the assist.

Curry and Johnson & Wales each went 1-3 on power plays.  The Colonels finished with a game-high 40 shots and the Wildcats 26.

Curry's Sinclair had 23 stops in net.  Ballmar made an impressive 39 saves in goal for Johnson & Wales.

Curry's next game is at home on Saturday, February 14 at 4:40 p.m.  Johnson & Wales will take on Western New England on Saturday, February 14 in a 4:45 p.m. start.
