PORTSMOUTH, R.I. – The Salve Regina University men's ice hockey team defeats Curry College 3-0 at the Abbey on senior day.

Sophomore netminder Alexander Devine (Hampton, N.H.) earned his second shutout of the season and the Seahawks capitalized on key scoring chances to secure the victory.

The first period was a defensive battle with neither team able to generate quality scoring chances. Despite outshooting the Colonels 15-6 the Seahawks offense was stuck on the perimeter as the Curry defenders did a god job to disrupt drives to the net or passes through the slot.

The game remained tied until midway through the second period when Alex Pompeo (Hingham, Mass.) drove a puck strong down the left side of the ice, using his body to shield the puck from a defender and threw it on net with his backhand. Derek Mohney (Amherst, N.Y.) made the initial save but the rebound fell right into the lap of Jonathan Felteau (Peabody, Mass.) who quickly snapped it home to give the Seahawks a 1-0 lead.

Matthew Carroll (Hackensack, N.J.) scored again for Salve Regina in the third period to make it 2-0. Carroll had a slaps shot from the point get blocked but come right back to him so he fired it again and it found it's way to the back of the net.

As time ticked down in the period the Seahawks ramped up their defense preventing the Colonels from getting any good looks at the net, while peppering Mohney with shots from all over the ice.

A penalty against Joseph Yeadon (Burlington, Mass.) gave the Colonels life as they went on the man advantage with over three and a half minutes left in the third.  The Colonels spent most of the powerplay in the Seahawks zone but could not get shots through to Devine. After the penalty expired the Colonels pulled Mohney leading to Pompeo scoring the empty net goal to seal the win for the Seahawks with 41 seconds left in the third.

Overall the Seahawks outshot the Colonels 52-20, holding Curry to seven or less shots on goal in each period.

Salve Regina has now won four straight and improves to 9-8-2 overall and 7-3-0 in the ECAC Northeast.

Curry meanwhile falls to 9-8-2 overall but 2-5-1 in ECAC Northeast play.

The Seahawks next play Becker on February 11 at 7:35 p.m. at the Abbey while the Colonels host Johnson and Wales on February 12 at 6:40 p.m. (Game Recap Courtesy of Salve Regina Sports Information)
