Hockey Tripped Up by Visiting Conference Foe Western New England, 5-1

MILTON, Mass.- In an ECAC Northeast conference match-up in men's ice hockey action on Saturday evening at the Max Ulin Rink, Curry College lost to Western New England, 5-1.  With the loss, the Colonels fall to 9-6-2 overall and 2-3-1 in the conference.  The Golden Bears improve to 2-12-3 overall and 2-5-0 in the conference.

Curry was first to get on the board in the opening period just 2:20 into the game.  Freshman Jack O'Hara (Toronto, Ontario) fired a shot that sailed past the glove of Western New England's junior netminder Tim Carr (Pine Bush, N.Y.).  O'Hara was assisted by sophomores James Murphy (Malden, Mass.) and Dan McGinnis (Hanover, Mass.).  This would be the Colonels only goal on the night.  The Golden Bears tied the game midway through the first off a tally from Andy Cramer (New Wilmington, Pa.).  Cramer took a slap shot just over the blueline past Curry's senior goaltender Derek Mohney (Amherst, N.Y.).  Junior Chris Lembo (Southington, Conn.) and senior Michael Darrar (Montoe Township, N.J.) were credited with the assists.

Despite Curry outshooting Western New England 23-13 in the second frame, the Colonels couldn't find the back of the net.  Solid play between the pipes by Carr held the Colonels scoreless.  The Golden Bears were able to put up two more to take a 3-1 lead heading into the final period.  The game-winning goal was scored at the 10:31 minute mark.  Sophomore Dane Genord (Grand Blanc, Mich.) received the puck in front of the net for his first tally of the game.  Genord was assisted by freshman David DiSchiavi (Etobicoke, Ontario) and Darrar.  With 3:18 minutes left in the second senior Brendan Stroud (Clarksville, Ind.) netted his teams third off assists by DiSchiavi and Genord.

Curry controlled most of the third period holding a demanding 17-6 lead in shots but another strong showing in net for Carr helped seal the win for his team.  Western New England earned two more over the final 20 minutes for game total of five.  Just three minutes in, sophomore Josh Twietmeyer (Everett, Wash.) stole the puck from a Curry defenseman and skated down the ice for an unassisted tally.  The Golden Bears final score of the night was an empty net goal with 2:01 remaining.  The Colonels had possession in Western New England's defensive zone but the Golden Bears were able to gain control of the puck.  Carr made a save with Stroud winning the rebound.  Stroud sent a pass to senior Matt Dore (Shelburne, Mass.) who sent the puck down the ice into the back of the net.

Curry went 0-2 on power plays while Western New England was 0-1.  The Colonels finished with a game-high 56 shots and the Golden Bears 32.

Curry's Mohney had 27 stops in net.  Carr made an impressive 55 saves in goal for Western New England.

Curry's next game is away at Nichols College on Wednesday, February 4 at 8:10 p.m.  Western New England will take on Nichols College on Monday, February 2.
