Reed Nets a Hat Trick as Hockey Downs Buffalo State, 7-3

MILTON, Mass.- In a non-conference match-up in men's ice hockey action on Saturday evening at the Max Ulin Rink, Curry College defeated Buffalo State, 7-3.  With the win, the Colonels improve to 9-5-2 overall.  The Bengals fall to 5-7-4 overall.

The first period saw Buffalo with a slight advantage in shots at 13-9 and a tie game after 20 minutes of play.  Curry was first to get on the board at the 13:37 minute mark.  Adam Valadao (Ajax, Ontario) netted a short-handed goal after Shane Harrington (Mansfield, Mass.) was called for a hit after the whistle.  The Colonels were able to clear the puck out of their defensive zone and nice passing by Jordan Reed (Ajax, Ontario) and Jake Heisinger (Winnipeg, Manitoba) led to Valadaos' goal.  The Bengals didn't waste much time tying the score as they tallied their first just under three minutes later.  Charles Lapierre (St-Marc de Figuery, QB) stuck one past Curry's netminder Brett Sinclair (St. Catharines, Ontario) off assists by Ryan Demyen (Hubbard, Ohio) and Ryan Stayner (Youngstown, N.Y.).

In the second period, the Colonels held a demanding lead in shots at 20-10 and also outscored the Bengals 3-0.  Jack O'Hara (Toronto, Ontario) netted his first collegiate goal just 50 seconds into the frame.  O'Hara received a pass from James Murphy (Malden, Mass.) and Harrington and shot it into the top right corner of the net past Buffalo's goaltender Ian Sylves (Sloan, N.Y.).  Curry took a 4-1 lead to head into the final stanza after scoring two power plays goals.  The Bengals Scott Roy (Rockland, Ontario) was called for charging at 13:18.  Just 48 seconds into the power-play Harrington took a slap shot just over the blue-line and into the net.  Phil Kiss (Burlington, Ontario) and Valadao were credited with the assists.  The Colonels earned their second power-play goal of the period at the 18:13 minute mark.  With 30 seconds left in the PP, Reed earned the game-winning goal after tipping the puck over the pads of Sylves.  Reed was assisted by Chris Mason (Monrovia, Calif.) and Murphy.

Curry opened the final period with five penalties in the first 12 minutes.  Buffalo was able to take advantage, netting two goals off power-plays and cutting the Colonels lead down to one.  At 7:28, a little over one minute of Harrington's penalty, Jason Zaleski (Scranton, Pa.) earned his first score of the game after receiving a pass from Ryan Salkeld (Virginia Beach, Va.) and Brett Hope (Blenheim, Ontario).  4:32 minutes later, the Bengals got on the board again to make it a 4-3 game.  This however would be the final goal for Buffalo.  Brody Power (Toronto, Ontario) sent the puck to Taylor Pryce (Newmarket, Ontario) who was open in front of the net for the tally.  The Colonels produced three more scores over the final 16:40 of the match.  Curry's fifth came off a penalty shot by Reed, his second on the night.  Power's was called for hooking after Reed was taken down skating with the puck all alone to net.  Reed netted his third, a hat trick, just minutes later.  The Bengals pulled Sylves with 1:37 showing on the clock.  Heisinger won the face-off and sent a nice pass to Reed for the empty net goal.  The final score came with 50 seconds left to play.  Tyler Vankleef (Dundas, Ontario) took a shot that sailed over Sylves off a pass from Sean Nelson (Brighton, Mich.) and Adam DiBrina (Sudbury, Ontario).

Curry went 3-7 on power plays while Buffalo was 2-11.  The Blue DeColonels finished with a game-high 37 shots and the Bengals 34.
