Hockey Tripped Up at Johnson & Wales, 3-1

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The men's ice hockey team posted a 3-1 victory over Curry in an ECAC Northeast contest at Lynch Arena/Blackstone Valley Sports Center on Saturday evening.

Johnson & Wales got on the board first when sophomore Ben Brouillard (Somerset, Mass.) found the back of the net with assists to sophomore Drew Kariofiles (Cincinnati, Ohio) and senior Jason Healey (Goshen, N.Y.) to out the Wildcats up 1-0.  JWU struck again just over two minutes later as sophomore Michael Mazzotta (Mars, Pa.) scored his first goal of the season, putting in a pass from junior captain Cody Sarmiento (Sarasota, Fla.) and sophomore Stefan Brucato (Lake Elsinore, Calif.) on the power play for the two goal lead.  JWU took the 2-0 lead heading into the locker room after out shooting Curry by a 10-9 margin.

The two teams battled through a scoreless second period, despite JWU holding a commanding 14-6 advantage in shots for the stanza.

The Wildcats capitalized on their second power play of the game just 2:40 into the third period after junior Josh Obregon (Omaha, Neb.) notched his second goal of the season, with Brucato and Mazzotta setting up the play to extend the lead to 3-0.  Curry was able to get on the board at the 16:10 mark of the third period as senior Jordan Reed's (Ajax, Ontario) second goal of the year cut the lead to 3-1.  The visiting Colonels pulled the goalie for the final three plus minutes of the contest, but JWU managed to control the action down the stretch and took the 3-1 victory.

Sophomore Joey Ballmer (Kalamazoo, Mich.) made 25 saves in the victory for Johnson & Wales while senior Derek Mohney (Amherst, N.Y.) tallied 33 stops for Curry in the loss.

With the win Johnson & Wales evens their record at 2-2 on the year and 1-2 in league play while Curry falls to 2-4 on the season and 1-2 in the ECAC Northeast.  The Wildcats will return to action on Thursday, November 20th when they host Becker in an ECAC Northeast contest starting at 7:45 p.m.  (Game Recap Courtesy of Johnson & Wales Sports Information)
