Hockey Upended 4-1 in Season Opener by Visiting Babson College

MILTON, Mass.- In a non-conference match-up in men's ice hockey action on Saturday evening at the Max Ulin Rink, Curry College lost to Babson College, 4-1 .  With the loss, the Colonels fell to 0-1 in their season opener while the Beavers improved to 1-0 overall.

Babson outshot the Colonels 13-9 in the first period and took an early 1-0 lead just 4:45 into the stanza.  Senior Andrew Bonazza (Dartmouth, Nova Scotia) one-timed the puck over the shoulder of Curry's senior goaltender Derek Mohney (Amherst, N.Y.).  Bonazza was assisted by classmate Joe DiPietro (Pembroke, Mass.) and sophomore Michael Phillips (Richmond Heights, Ohio).  Solid play between the pipes from the Beaver's junior netminder Jamie Murray (Scituate, Mass.) held the Colonels scoreless.

Curry came out strong to start the second stanza tying the game at one apiece with only four minutes off the clock.  Freshman Adam Valadao (Ajax, Ontario) netted his first collegiate goal when he took a shot that sailed past Murray.  Senior Jordan Reed (Ajax, Ontario) and freshman Ryan Fitzgerald (Cary, N.C) were credited with the assists.  The teams battled over the next 14 minutes both trying to take the advantage heading into the final period.  It was Babson who would earn the game-winning goal at the 18:27 minute mark.  Junior Max Franklin (Wrentham, Mass.) collected the puck from freshman Charlie Ackerman (Bradenton, Fla.) for his first score on the season.

The Beavers got an insurance tally midway through the final 20 minutes of regulation.  Babson went up 3-1 after Phillips collected a loose puck in front of the net and sent it past Mohney.  DiPietro and freshman Joe DePietto (Westbury, N.Y.) were on the assists.  The Beavers ended the night with their fourth goal on an empty net score.  Ackerman was all alone with the puck and shot it just outside the blueline for his first collegiate goal.

Curry went 0 for 3 on power-plays, while the Babson was 0 for 6. The Colonels finished with 27 shots while the Beavers had 33.

Curry's Mohney made 29 saves in net in the loss.  Murray came up with 26 stops for Babson for the win.

Curry's next game is at home against UMass Boston on Sunday, November 2 at 4:40 p.m.  Babson travels to Saint Anselm on Friday, November 7 for a 7:00 p.m. game start.
