Mohney Named as ECAC Northeast Goaltender of the Year

CENTERVILLE, Mass. – The Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) announced its 2013-2014 Northeast Hockey All-Conference Teams today. Johnson & Wales University sophomore forward Josh Obregon (Omaha, Neb.) has been named the ECAC Northeast Player of the Year, while junior Derek Mohney (Amherst, N.Y.) of Curry College was tabbed as Goaltender of the Year, and Suffolk University freshman forward Simon Leahy (Milwaukee, Wis.) was voted the Conference Rookie of the Year. Wentworth Institute of Technology Head Coach RJ Tolan was selected by his peers as the ECAC Northeast Coach of the Year. The voting for the All-Conference Teams and major award winners was completed by the head coaches within the ECAC Northeast.

Mohney led one of the league's best defenses by posting a 2.12 goals against average, good for second in the conference, and a .932 save percentage, also second among ECAC Northeast Hockey goaltenders. In 964:20 minutes of action, he surrendered just 34 goals and made 468 saves. His efforts helped the Colonels allow just 2.56 goals per game as they earned the No. 6 seed in the ECAC Northeast Hockey Tournament with a 6-8-0 record in conference play and went 10-13-2 overall.  Mohney was named ECAC Northeast Goaltender of the Week on Jan. 27 as he went 2-0 on the week, including a 25 save shutout against SUNY Canton, before allowing just one goal and registering 21 saves in a 4-1 victory over Suffolk.
