Hockey Advances to ECAC Northeast Semi-Final Round With a 4-1 Win Over Salve Regina

PORTSMOUTH, R.I. - Junior goal Derek Mohney (Amherst, N.Y.) made 37 saves and allowed just one goal as visiting Curry College (11-13-2) defeated Salve Regina University, 4-1, in ECAC Northeast men's ice hockey championships quarterfinal at Portsmouth Abbey.

The sixth-seeded Colonels had dropped two regular-season decisions to the third-seeded Seahawks this year, including a 3-2 overtime decision in Milton, Mass., three weeks ago.

The teams played scoreless ice hockey for the first 19 minutes. Junior forward Jordan Reed (Ajax, Ontario) got loose for a break away opportunity before tripped by Salve Regina's Cameron Gaudet (Burlington, Mass.). Reed, awarded a penalty shot on the play, skated the puck from center ice at 19:31 and moved to his left to beat Salve Regina goalie David Chiokadze (Langhorne, Pa.) with a backhander.

The Seahawks outshot the Colonels eight to five in the first period, but did not get a shot to reach Mohney during a five on three power-play in the middle of the opening stanza.

Freshman Sean Nelson (Brighton, Mich.) made it a 2-0 game in the first minute of the second period with a power-play goal for his fifth net finder of the season.

Salve Regina (11-15-0), hosting its first-ever post-season game as a varsity program, trailed 3-0 when Chris Mason (Monrovia, Calif.) found the back of the net, his third goal of the season. The Seahawks swapped Jake Williams (Montreal, Quebec) in net for Chiokadze after the Mason goal.

With 21 shots in the second period, only one evaded Mohney. That was Peter Gintoli's (Monroe, Conn.) 10th goal of the season at 14:02. Senior David Watkins (Natick, Mass.) assisted Gintoli's team-leading 26th point of the season. Gintoli ended a 100-minute scoring drought for the Seahawks.

Curry's final goal came off the stick of sophomore Frankie Posillico (Massapequa, N.Y.) at 6:50 in the third. Salve Regina emptied its net with under four minutes remaining in the third, but came up empty on three shots at Mohney. Sophomore Marc Biggs (Plano, Texas) and Gaudet fired on net after Mike Apreda (Newmarket, Quebec) hit the pipe for Curry.

The Colonels advance to the semifinal as the lowest remaining seed and will play at top-seeded Ncihols College on Wednesday. Johnson & Wales, which shutout Salve Regina last Sunday, blanked Suffolk University in the other quarterfinal today. The Wildcats will skate at second-seeded Wentworth on Wednesday.

Salve Regina's season ends as the Seahawks tied their program record with 11 wins. (Game recap courtesy of SRU Sports Information)
