Hockey Falls to Salve Regina 3-2 in Overtime

MILTON, Mass.- In an ECAC Northeast Conference match-up in men's ice hockey action on Saturday afternoon in Milton, Mass., Curry College lost to Salve Regina, 3-2 in overtime.  With the loss, the Colonels fell to 8-11-2 overall and 4-6 conference play. The Seahawks improved to 8-13-0 overall and 6-4-0 in the ECAC Northeast.

The Colonels were first to get on the board at the 12:26 minute mark in the opening frame.  Freshman Dan McGinnis (Hanover, Mass.) netted the first goal of the night off assists from freshmen Mike Sones (Waterdown, Ontario) and James Murphy (Malden, Mass.). Just 2:22 minutes later, the Seahawks answered back to tie the game at one apiece.  Sophomore Marc Bigss (Plano, Texas) was able to net the puck past Curry's junior goaltender Derek Mohney (Amherst, N.Y.). Salve's sophomore goaltender, David Chiokadze (Langhorne, Pa.) played solid between the pipes turning away 11 shots to hold the Colonels at one goal. 

Curry regained the lead 13:39 minutes into the second period.  The Colonels' took advantage of a man-up situation for their final tally of the night.  Freshman Michael Vallescuro (Woodbridge, Ontario) one-timed the puck past Chioadze for the score. Senior Brad Devereaux (Duxbury, Mass.) and sophomore Brandon Gilmore (Quincy, Mass.) were credited with the assists.  The Colonel's ended the period with 14 shots on net while the Seahawks landed seven.

Curry couldn't hold on to the lead as Salve went on to tally the final two goals of the game for the 3-2 victory.  The tying score came just 59 seconds into the third.  The Colonels were playing out a penalty that carried over from the second period and the Seahawks capitalized. Freshman Jonathan Felteau (Peabody, Mass.) was able to maneuver the puck past Mohney for his first point of the game.  Sophomores Peter Gintoli (Monroe, Conn.) and Alec Butler (Marlborough, Mass.) were credited with the assists. 

Both teams battled hard in overtime, but it was Salves' junior John Scorcia (Hudson, Fla.) who had the game-winner.  Scorcia received a pass in front of the net and sent the puck over the shoulder of Mohney.  Butler and senior Trey Rasmussen (Vinyard Haven, Mass.) earned the assists.

Mohney picked up 29 saves for the Colonels in the loss. Chiokadze tallied 35 stops for the win.

Curry will travel to ECAC Northeast opponent Johnson & Wales on Thursday, February 13 for a 7:40 p.m. start.  Salve Regina travels to ECAC Northeast opponent Becker College on Wednesday, February 12 for a 6:00 p.m. game.
