Hockey Shut Out 4-0 at Fredonia State

FREDONIA, N.Y. -- It was a game of collegiate firsts -- goals by freshman Frankie Hart (Timmins, Ont.) and Zach White (Taberg, N.Y.), and a win and shutout for freshman Jeff Flagler (Owen Sount, Ont.) -- as Fredonia State defeated Curry, 4-0, in men's college hockey Saturday afternoon.

In addition, sophomore Taylor Bourne (Calgery, Alberta) scored his first goal of the season, and senior Matt Owczarczak (Buffalo, N.Y.) added his second as the Blue Devils improved to 4-8-3 and dropped the Colonels to 4-9-2.

The Blue Devils took a 1-0 on Bourne's goal, a shot from the slot following a pass from John DeFeo (Glen Head, N.Y.) out of the right wing corner. Jared Wynia (Calgary, Alberta), a junior, was also credited with an assist.

Hart's first collegiate goal made it 2-0 midway through the second period. He teamed with fellow freshman Travis Fernley (Calgary, Alberta) on a 2-on-1 rush. Fernley's short pass connected with Hart in stride, who flicked the puck into the open side.

Fredonia State avoided a letdown later in the period after they were called for consecutive overlapping penalties. They killed off both penalties, including 24 seconds of 5-on-3. On the day, they were 5 of 5 on the penalty kill.

Owczarczak's goal was the result of another 2-on-1 rush midway through the third period. Fernley chipped the puck ahead to junior Stephen Castriota (Bellport, N.Y.), who fed Owczarczak on the rush for a shot into the top shelf.

White's goal was a rare short-handed empty-netter. It came when Curry head coach TJ Manastersky pulled goaltender Brett Sinclair (St. Catharines, Ontario) right after Owczarczak's goal upped the margin to 3-0. White knocked a loose puck up the ice and it traveled across the center line and into the empty net to complete the scoring.

Flagler earned the shutout -- the first recorded this season by the Blue Devils -- by making 30 saves. He improved his own record to 1-3-0.

Sinclair also made 30 saves in the Curry net.
