Hockey Defeats SUNY Canton, 4-2

MILTON, Mass.- In a non-conference match-up in men's ice hockey action on Sunday night in Milton, Mass., Curry College defeated SUNY Canton, 4-2 .  With the win, the Colonels improve to 3-8-2 overall. The Kangaroos fell to 3-12-1 on the season.

Curry was the first to get on the board at the 12:45 minute mark.  Sophomore Brandon Gilmore (Quincy, Mass.) collected his own rebound and was able to one-time it past SUNY Canton netminder junior Morgan Barr (Almonte, Ontario).  The Colonels outshot the Kangaroos 21-7.

SUNY Canton came out strong to start the second period, tying the score at one apiece 7:16 into the frame.  The Kangaroos took advantage of a man-up situation after the Colonels were called for interference.  Junior J.R. Lafferty (Williamstown, N.J.) took a slap shot outside the corner of the net over the shoulder of Curry's junior goaltender Derek Mohney (Amherst, N.Y.).  Lafferty was assisted by senior Cory Giczewski (Fountain Valley, Calif.) and freshman Sam McLaughlin (Ottawa, Ontario).  The Colonels however wasted no time regaining the lead 24 seconds later.   Freshman Tommy Tsicos (Barrie, Ontario) netted his first of the night with sophomore Shane Harrington (Mansfield, Mass.) and sophomore Dominic Puntillo (Amherst, N.Y.) credited with the assists.  Curry held a slight advantage in shots with 20-16. 

Sophomore Frankie Posillico (Massapequa, N.Y.) scored the game-winning goal 5:52 into the final period.  The Colonels won the face-off in the Kangaroos defensive end which resulted in Curry's third goal.  Freshmen Tyler Vankleef (Dundas, Ontario) and Sean Nelson (Brighton, Mich.) were on the assists.  SUNY Canton cut the lead to one on a lone-goal by freshman Nick Vasilopoulos (Montreal, QC) late in stanza,  Vasilopoulos skated with the puck down the ice and shot the puck into the back of the net past Mohney.  With less than two minutes to play the Kangaroos pulled Barr to give them an extra man in hopes to tie the match.  The Colonels put the game away though 12 seconds later on an empty net tally by freshman James Murphy (Malden, Mass.).  Junior Braeden Ruud (Vermilion, Alberta) and Puntillo were credited with the assists.

The Colonels went 0 for 3 on power-plays, while the Kangaroos went 1 for 4. Curry finished with 48 shots while SUNY Canton finished with 37.

Mohney earned the win in net making made 35 saves.  Barr came up with 44 stops for SUNY Canton in the loss.

Curry's next game is away at Buffalo State on Friday, January 17 at 7:00 p.m.  SUNY Canton travels to Morrisville State on Friday, January 17 for a 7:00 p.m. game start.
