Hockey Battles UMass Dartmouth to a 2-2 Overtime Tie

MILTON, Mass. – In a nonconference match-up in men's ice hockey action on Thursday night in Milton, Mass., Curry College tied UMass Dartmouth, 2-2.  With the tie, the Colonels moved to 2-5-1 overall. The Corsairs are now 2-6-2 overall.

The Corsairs were the first to get on the board in the opening stanza.  At the 9:20 minute mark sophomore Mike Restuccia (Malden, Mass.) received a pass from freshman Tanner Zacharewicz (Ludlow, Mass.).  Restuccia one-timed the puck into the back of the net past the Colonel's junior goaltender Derek Mohney (Amherst, N.Y.).  Curry outshot Umass Dartmouth 14-7 but solid play between the pipes from the Corsairs senior netminder Ben Vandervies (Hanna, Alberta) kept them scoreless.

The teams went 15:25 minutes of play in the second period before the Colonels got on the board to tie the game at one apiece.  Freshman Joe Scarfo (Winthrop, Mass.) netted the goal for Curry.  Scarfo was assisted by sophomore Brandon Gilmore (Quincy, Mass.) and freshman Jake Heisinger (Winnipeg, Manitoba).  The Colonels had two back-to-back man-up chances but were unable to take the lead.  Once again Curry led in shots, 9-8.

The Colonels tallied a short-handed goal to take the 2-1 lead at the 9:31 mark.  Sophomore Shane Harrington (Mansfield, Mass.) intercepted a pass in his zone and skated up the ice before dumping it into the corner.  He then went in and stole the puck from a UMass defenseman before beating Vandervies along the ice for the shorthanded tally.

Curry's lead didn't last long however as the Corsairs quickly tied it just 22 seconds later on a power-play.  The teams battled over the remainder of regulation but neither team could come up with the game-winner.  UMass held a slight edge in shots, 9-8. While the overtime period saw no scoring, both teams had chances and the shots were 3-2 in favor of the Corsairs.

UMass Dartmouth was 1-for-7 on the power play while Curry was 0-for-4.  The Colonels led in shots over the Corsairs, 33-27

Mohney made 25 saves for Curry in goal. Vandervies had 31 stops in net.

The Colonels are idle until January 3 when they travel to Oswego State for a 7:00 p.m. game in the Oswego Classic, while the Corsairs host Fitchburg State on December 7 in a 4:30 p.m. game start.
