Hockey Shut Out, 4-0, by Visiting Western New England

MILTON, Mass.- In an ECAC Northeast Conference match-up in men's ice hockey action on Thursday night in Milton, Mass., Curry College lost to Western New England, 4-0 .  With the loss, the Colonels fell to 1-3 overall and 0-2 in the ECAC Northeast conference. The Golden Bears improved to 3-1 overall and 2-0 in the ECAC Northeast.

The teams battled each other to a scoreless first period with the squads taking just five shots apiece. The Golden Bears took control in the second stanza netting three goals. Western New England outshot Curry just 13-11, but solid play between the pipes by senior netminder Eric Sorenson (Fairport, N.Y.) kept the Colonels scoreless.

Western New England tallied back-to-back power play goals to take the lead.  At 7:36 of the second, junior Joe Budnick (Newington, Conn.) one-timed the puck past Curry's freshman goaltender Brett Sinclair (St. Catharines, Ontario).  Juniors Michael Darrar (Monroe Twp., N.J.) and Matt Dore (Shelburne, Mass.) were credited with the assists.  Just 44 seconds later, sophomore Will Preston (Carmel, Ind.) earned his first of the night after he put one through the legs of Sinclair.  Senior Dan Monahan (Monroe, N.Y.) and freshman Michael Farino (Highland Park, Ill.) earned the assists.  The Colonels pressured the Golden Bears defense and landing all 11 shots on Sorenson, but they struggled to find the back of the net.  Western New England wasn't finished with their scoring frenzy as they put up one more before the period ended.  At the 19:50 minute mark, sophomore Ryan Taylor (Canfield, Ohio) collected a loose puck in front of the net and scored unassisted.

Midway through the final 20 minutes of regulation, the Golden Bears netted their fourth and final score of the night.  Western New England won the face-off in the Colonels defensive end and with 8:59 showing on the clock was able to stick another past the glove of Sinclair.  Budnick found freshman Josh Twietmeyer (Everett, Wash.) just outside the crease and sent him a pass.  Twietmeyer maneuvered the puck around a Curry defenseman and shot it into the low corner of the net.

The Colonels went 0 for 5 on power-plays, while the Golden Bears went 2 for 8. Curry finished with 22 shots while Western New England finished with 27.

Curry's Sinclair made 23 saves in net in the loss.  Sorenson came up with 22 stops for Western New England for the win.
