Men's Hockey Falls to Visiting Babson, 4-2

MILTON, Mass. - In men's ice hockey action on Wednesday evening in Milton, Curry College lost to Babson College, 4-2.  With the win the Beavers improved to 5-2-2 overall.  The Colonels fell to 4-4-1 overall.

Freshman Brandon Gilmore (Quincy, Mass.) tallied both goals in the opening frame as the Colonels took a 2-0 lead after 20 minutes of play.  Gilmore netted his first at the 15:56 minute mark.  Junior Michael Lopez (Newton, Mass.) won the face-off in Babson’s defensive zone.  Lopez sent the puck to assistant captain Connor Hendry (Calgary, Alberta) who saw an open Gilmore in front of the net.  His second came just three minutes later off assists by Hendry and junior Josh Pineiro (Huntington, Calif.).  Gilmore took a slap shot from outside the slot that sailed over the shoulder of the Beaver’s senior netminder Zeke Testa (Wellesley, Mass.).  Curry’s sophomore goaltender Derek Mohney (Amherst, N.Y.) was solid between the pipes to hold Babson scoreless.

The second period saw Babson score three unanswered to goals.  Junior Troy Starrett (Bellingham, Mass.) one-timed the puck past Mohney just 5:26 into the stanza.  Senior PT Donato (Arlington, Mass.) and freshman Phil Saviuk (Pointe-Claire, Quebec) were credited with the assists.  Less than one minute later the Beavers tied the game at two apiece.  Senior Ryan Smith (Lynnfield, Mass.) skated with the puck around a Curry defender after he received a pass from senior Jay Haseley (Rochester, N.Y.) and junior Matt O’Neill (Norwell, Mass.).  The Colonels had chances of their own to take back the lead but Teste came up with 13 stops.  Babson scored the eventual game-winner with seven minutes remaining to play in the period.  Junior Nik Tasiopoulos (Norwell, Mass.) earned his team’s win after he tipped the puck just past the glove of Mohney.  Tasiopoulos was assisted by sophomores Mike Driscoll (Milton, Mass.) and Andrew Bonazza (Dartmouth, Nova Scotia).

The teams battled in the third with the Colonels outshooting the Beavers 12-9.  Curry however was unable to put up another point and with 21 seconds left in regulation Driscoll tallied an unassisted open-net goal.

Babson edged Curry in shots, 37-36.  Both teams were unsuccessful on the power-play.

The Colonels' Mohney made 33 saves in goal in the loss.  The Beaver's Teste had 34 saves in the win.

Curry's next game is at home against Skidmore College on Saturday, December 8 at 4:35 p.m.  Babson will travel to Vermont after the holidays to take on Middlebury in the Middlebury Classic on December 30 for a 4:00 p.m. game start.
