Hockey Captures 5-2 Decision Against Visiting Salve Regina

MILTON, Mass. - In an ECAC Northeast match-up in men's ice hockey on Saturday evening in Milton, Curry College defeated Salve Regina University, 5-2.  With the win the Colonels improve to 4-3-1 overall and are 3-1-1 in the conference. The Seahawks fell to 4-7-0 overall and 2-3-0 in the ECAC Northeast.

Curry’s senior assistant captain Ian DeLong (Kutztown, Pa.) netted his second hat trick on the season and assisted on a goal and sophomore Jordan Reed (Ajax, Ontario) scored two and was also credited with two assists, to lead their team with four points apiece.

The Colonels were first to get on the board just over one minute into the opening frame.  DeLong was alone in front of the net and one-timed the puck past the Seahawks’ freshman goaltender David Chiokadze (Langhorne, Pa.) after receiving a pass from senior assistant captain Connor Hendry (Calgary, Alberta) and freshman Brandon Gilmore (Quincy, Mass.).  At the 6:05 minute mark Salve Regina tied the score when freshman Alec Butler (Marlborough, Mass.) took a slap shot right outside the slot that slid past Curry's sophomore netminder Derek Mohney (Amherst, N.Y).  Senior Mike Cenesio (Chadds Ford, Pa.) and freshman Zakerie Thompson (Rochester, Mich.) were on the assists.  The Seahawks took the lead just five minutes later after they won the face off and skated the puck into the Colonels defensive zone.  Freshman Marc Biggs (Piano, Texas) tallied his team’s final goal of the game off assists by senior Jacob Hutt (Menlo Park, Calif.) and sophomore John Scorcia (Hudson, Fla.).  The Seahawks were called for boarding and Curry took advantage of the man-up situation to tie the game at two before the period came to an end.  DeLong netted his second on the night, while Reed and senior captain Brett Kaneshiro (Laguna Niguel, Calif.) earned the assists.

Curry controlled the remaining 40 minutes of play, scoring three more goals for the 5-2 win.  Solid play between the pipes from Mohney kept Salve Regina scoreless over the final two periods.   Reed tallied one in the second stanza which led to the game winner.  He was able to tip the puck in after receiving a pass from junior Mike Lopez (Newton, Mass.) and freshman Shane Harrington (Mansfield, Mass.).  His next goal came at the 6:55 minute mark into the third on another Curry power-play.  With just nine seconds left of the Seahawk penalty, Reed took a slap shot that went over the right-hand glove of Chiokadze.  He was assisted by Gilmore and DeLong.  The Colonels’ final score of the night came off the stick of DeLong.  Curry was again successful on their power-play and netted their third man-up goal of the game.  Gilmore earned his third assist and Reed his second.

Curry outshot Salve Regina just 32-28 and went 3 for 6 on power-plays, while the Seahawks were 0-3.

The Colonels’ Mohney made 26 saves in goal for the win.  Salve Regina’s Chiokadze had 27 saves in the loss.

Curry's next game is at home against Babson College on Wednesday, December 5 at 7:35 p.m.  Salve Regina will host Franklin Pierce on Friday for a 7:35 p.m. game start.
