Hockey Falls to Nazareth, 4-2, in Skidmore Invitational Championship Game

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. — The Skidmore College hockey team extended its unbeaten streak to five with a 3-2 win over SUNY Morrisville in the third place game of the Skidmore Invitational, Sunday at the Saratoga Springs City Rink.

Nazareth College beat Curry College, 4-2 in the championship game.

The Thoroughbreds improve to 4-2-2, while the Mustangs fall to 0-10. Skidmore returns to ECAC East play at home Friday against Norwich at 7 p.m.

After a scoreless first period, Morrisville struck first when freshman defenseman Tyson Avery scored his first career goal on a power play at 11:52 of the second.

Skidmore came out strong in the third, tying the game 1-1 when Zach Menard fired one past Mustang goalie Jakob Rasmussen from Jack Even and Julian Malakorn at 2:35.  The Thoroughbreds went on top 2-1 minutes later on a power-play goal by Tony Giacin from Menard and Brad Schuler at 5:14. Morrisville tied it 2-2 after an extended period of play in the Skidmore end, when Michael Markowitz scored his third of the season at 14:11.   Menard got the game winner 15 seconds into a power play at 15:35 from Giacin and Tim Colvin.

Brad Cray picked up the win in goal with 18 saves over the final two periods. Ben Freiberg stopped all 10 shots he faced in the first period. Rasmussen had 31 saves for Morrisville.

Menard and Morrisville's James Jarvis were selected to the All-Tournament Team.

In the championship game, Nazareth (3-7-1) erased a 2-0 Curry (3-3) lead with three goals during a 5:00 power play late in the second period.  Julius Tamasy, Jon-Paul Durso, and Scott Andler scored at 15:36, 17:02, and 18:28 for the Golden Flyers. Tournament MVP Scott Dawson added an insurance goal at 6:54 of the third.

Nazareth goalie Ed Zdolshek stopped 17 third-period shots, finishing with 26 saves total.
