Hockey Advances to Skidmore Invitational Championship Game After 4-1 Victory Over Morrisville

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y.— The Skidmore College men's hockey team tied Nazareth College 3-3 in the first round of the Skidmore Invitational, Saturday afternoon at the Saratoga Springs City Rink.
 
The Golden Flyers will advance to Sunday's 4 p.m. championship game against Curry College after winning the shootout 2-1.  Curry beat Morrisville 4-1. The Thoroughbreds will play in the 1 p.m. consolation game.
 
The win extends Skidmore's (3-2-2) unbeaten streak to four. The tie snaps a six-game Nazareth losing streak (2-7-1).

Curry improves to 3-2, while Morrisville drops to 0-9.

The Thoroughbreds broke through first with 14.8 seconds left in the first period when Vlad Gavrik finished off a series of passes he started for his third goal of the season from Brad Schuler and Tony Giacin.
 
Nazareth came out strong in the second half, tying the game at 10:38 when Kyle Schwartz's shot found the top of the net for his first career goal.  The Golden Flyers took a 2-1 lead at 13:05 when Packy Jones collected a loose puck and scored his fourth of the season.   The Thoroughbreds tied it before the break when Brad Schuler scored on a scramble in front from Giacin and Zach Menard at 18:04.
 
Mark Zavorin opened the scoring in the third for Nazareth with his seventh of the season at 5:36.  Schuler tied it for Skidmore from Giacin at 8:03.  The Thoroughbreds then killed off a 5-on-3 in the final four minutes and then had to kill off a major for the final 1:17 of regulation and the first 3:43 of the overtime.
 
Skidmore goalie Spencer Sodokoff had four of his 12 third-period saves during the 5-on-3. He finished with 28 saves for the game.  Joe Gladnick had 32 saves for Nazareth including a stop on a shorthanded breakaway with 26 seconds left in regulation.
 
In the shootout, Ben Waldman and Jones scored for the Golden Flyers, while Brendan Cottam scored for the Thoroughbreds.

Curry broke open a 1-1 game with three unanswered second period goals. Morrisville led 1-0 on Steve Dol's second of the season at 13:42.   The Colonels responded with a short-handed goal by Connor Hendry at 18:02.
 
The second period was all Curry, Michael Lopez scored a power-play goal at 2:21 to make it 2-1. Joshua Pineiro made it 3-1 at 9:05 and Lopez closed the period with his second of the game at 17:39.
 
Derek Mohney had 20 saves in goal for his first win of the season for the Colonels. Jakob Rasmussen stopped 14 shots for the Mustangs.
