Hockey Shut Out at Tufts 6-0

MALDEN, Mass.- Junior goalie Brian Phillips (Colleyville, TX) made 42 saves for his first career shutout and senior co-captain Dylan Plimmer (Phoenix, AZ) scored twice as the Tufts hockey team won 6-0 against Curry College in a non-league game at Valley Forum II on Tuesday night.

The Jumbos ended a three-game losing streak against Curry, which had posted consecutive one-goal wins in the series since the 2009-10 season. At 2-0-1, Tufts is undefeated through three games for the first time since the 2000-01 season. Curry dropped to 2-2.

Tufts scored twice on its first six shots in the opening period, forcing the Colonels to make a goaltending change. Sophomore Tyler Voigt (Rochester, MN) scored the only goal Tufts would need at 9:46, and barely two minutes later junior Kyle Gallegos (Westminster, CO) made it 2-0 at 11:55 of the first.

Curry applied more pressure in the middle period and put 19 shots on Phillips, but he saved them all. Meanwhile, freshman Keith Campbell (Newark, DE) scored his first collegiate goal on a power-play at 13:17 to give the Jumbos a 3-0 advantage.

Plimmer scored both of his goals in the third as Tufts pulled away. He tallied another power-play goal for Tufts at 10:05, assisted by Voigt. Just 1:42 later, Gallegos set up Plimmer to make it 5-0 Tufts at 11:47 of the third.

Curry pulled goalie Charles White (Halifax, NS) late in the third in an attempt to get a goal. However, it resulted in an empty-net goal by Jumbo sophomore Andrew White (Rockland, MA) with 19 seconds remaining.

Again in the third, the Colonels put plenty of shots at Phillips with 17 in the period. However, he finished off the shutout and raised his save percentage on the season to a stellar .943 in the process. Curry finished the game with a 42-35 advantage in shots.

White led the Jumbos with a goal and two assists for three points, while Voigt and Gallegos both registered a goal and an assist.

The Colonels used all three of their goalies who dressed for the game. Sophomore Derek Mohney (Amherst, NY) started and made four saves, senior Joe Dawson (Woodbury, MN) finished the first period making five saves, and Whitle played the second and third periods stopping 20 shots.

Tufts plays in Castleton's Rutland Herald Invitational this weekend, facing Manhattanville on Saturday afternoon. Curry is at the Skidmore Invitational for the weekend, playing Morrisville in the opening round on Saturday. (Game Recap Courtesy of Tufts Sports Information)
