Posillico Nets Two as Hockey Defeats Suffolk, 4-1

BOSTON, Mass. --  Freshman Frankie Posillico (Massapequa, N.Y.) netted a pair of goals to lead Curry to a 4-1 ECAC Northeast ice hockey victory over Suffolk Thursday evening at Steriti Rink.

Posillico collected both of his markers in a three-goal first period outburst for the visiting Colonels (9-9-2, 5-2-2 ECAC Northeast), including a power play tally with 2:57 remaining in the opening stanza.  Freshman Carmen Mastrangelo (Wellington, Fla.) pulled the host Rams (6-10-4, 3-4-2 ECAC Northeast) back to within a pair with a goal that came 4:57 into the middle frame, but senior Brett Kaneshiro (Laguna Niguel, Calif.) provided some insurance for Curry with his first tally of the season that came with 1:02 to play in the second period and closed out the scoring for the contest.

Senior Connor Hendry (Calgary, Alta.) staked the Colonels to the early lead just 4:45 into play to account for the visitors’ other marker of the evening, as Curry received a goal and assist from Kaneshiro as well as a pair of assists each off the sticks of senior Casey Brugman (Winthrop, Mass.), sophomore Jordan Reed (Ajax, Ont.) and freshman Nicholas Coppola (Boliston, N.Y.) to go with a single helper from senior Ian DeLong (Lions, Pa.).

Sophomore Derek Mohney (Amherst, N.Y.) picked up the win in goal for Curry by stopping 20 of 21 shots for the contest, while the tandem of freshmen Brandon Smolarek (Chesterfield, Mo.) and Brian Jacobs (West Chester, Pa.), along with sophomore Brett Roman (Rock Tavern, N.Y.), combined for 32 saves in the setback for Suffolk, which received assists from sophomore Tim Benedetto (Peabody, Mass.) and freshman David Lazaro (Canton, Mass.) on Mastrangelo’s goal.  The Colonels outshot the Rams by a 36-21 margin on the evening, including an 18-2 advantage in the opening 20 minutes of play alone.

Suffolk hosts Salve Regina in an ECAC Northeast outing on Saturday afternoon at Steriti Rink that faces off at 4:25 p.m., while Curry hosts Western New England in an ECAC Northeast clash on Saturday afternoon in Milton, Mass. beginning at 4:35 p.m. (Game Recap Courtesy of Suffolk Sports Information)
