Hockey Falls, 5-0, to Visiting #3 Nationally Ranked Hobart College

MILTON, Mass.- Curry College lost to the #3 nationally ranked Hobart College, 5-0, in men's ice hockey action on Saturday evening in Milton, Mass. With the win, the Statesmen improved to 12-1-2 overall. The Colonels fell to 7-6-1 on the season.

The Colonels played solid defense in the opening frame, holding the Statesmen to just one goal.  The Colonels had chances of their own with 10 shots.  Hobart’s senior goaltender Nick Broadwater (Portland, Maine) however kept Curry scoreless.  The Statesmen earned their goal at the 11:52 minute mark.  Freshman Ben Gamache (Longlac, Ontario) got his team on the board with assists from sophomores Robert Sovik (Prague, Czech Republic) and Tommaso Traversa (Torino, Italy).  Gamache one-timed the puc k past the Colonels’ senior netminder Joe Dawson (Woodbury, Minn.).  Both teams battled for the remainder of period but Curry was unable to tie the score and Hobart was unlucky at increasing their lead.

The Statesmen took control of the game in the second period, tallying four goals off four different players.  Hobart’s second goal of the evening came at 7:06 into the period.  Hobart won the face-off in their own defensive zone and freshman Bo Webster (Aurora, Ont.) skated the puck down the ice and shot it just over the right shoulder of Dawson. Freshman Mac Olson (Grosse Pointe, Mich.) was credited with the assist.  Just over a minute later, Senior Dave Stevens (Toronto, Ontario) was all alone for an unassisted score.  The Colonels saw the Statesmen’s lead improve to four, 1:20 later.  Sophomore Terrence O’Neil (Kearny, N.J.) took a slap shot right outside the slot.  O’Neil was assisted by Olson, his second on the night and sophomore Brad McBride (Lone Tree, Co.). 

Curry took a time-out to regroup and made a goaltending change.  Sophomore Derek Mohney (So. Amherst, N.Y.) entered the game for Dawson and allowed just one Hobart goal.  The Statesmen earned their fifth and final of the contest after Curry was handed a penalty.  Hobart took advantage of the man-up situation.  Senior Frank Salituro (Vaughan, Ont.) received a pass on the right side corner of the net and maneuvered around Mohney.  Seniors Harry Radovich (Rumson, N.J.) and Ryan Corcoran (Stamford, Conn.) were on the assists.  Both goaltenders held their opponents scoreless in the third period with Mohney making eight stops and Broadwater an impressive 15.

Both teams received 15 penalties with the Statesmen having 48 penalty minutes and the Colonels 38.  Hobart held a slight advantage on shots with 37-34. 

Curry's Dawson made 20 saves allowing four goals in 32:44 minutes.  Mohney made 12 saves allowing just one goal in 27:16 minutes in net.  Hobart's Broadwater earned the shutout and win with 34 stops.

Curry's next game is at home on Tuesday, January 15 when they host Connecticut College at 7:35 p.m.  Hobart returns to action tomorrow when they travel to Nichols College in a 4:10 p.m. game start.
