Men's Basketball Suffers Conference Loss to Salve Regina in Home Finale

MILTON, Mass. – The Curry College men's basketball team fell by a 96-71 final to Salve Regina University on Wednesday night in Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) action at Katz Gymnasium.

Junior Cameron Collins (Oakdale, Conn.) notched a game-high 32 points and just missed a double-double with nine rebounds for the visiting Seahawks (11-13 overall, 7-8 CCC), who led from wire-to-wire. He shot 14-for-19 from the field and was one of three Salve Regina student-athletes to reach double figures. Sophomore Mikey Spencer (Abington, Mass.) followed with 20 points, six boards, one assist, and three steals. Junior Kevin Kelly (Valhalla, N.Y.) chipped in a double-double of 17 points and 12 assists. He also contributed six caroms, one steal, and a block.

Senior Daymeann Stewart (Milwaukee, Wis.) led the Colonels (5-19 overall, 1-14 CCC) with 24 points, including four field goals from beyond the arc. Senior Jared Thorpe-Johnson (Dorchester, Mass.) and freshman Michael Ashley (Atlanta, Ga.) pitched in 12 points apiece. Junior RJ Hadfield (Warwick, R.I.) paced the Curry reserves with six points off the bench.

The Seahawks, who outrebounded the Colonels 45-24 and held a 58-30 scoring advantage in the paint, also helped its own cause by forcing 12 that resulted in 16 points. Salve Regina shot 61 percent in the first half and cooled down in the second to 52 percent in the second.  

The Seahawks sprinted out to a 10-0 lead in the first 1:59, but Curry answered back with a 13-6 run to pull with three (16-13) with 13:51 to go in the opening stanza. The teams remained close for the next two minutes as Curry cut the deficit to four on an Ashley free throw to make the score 24-20 in favor of Salve Regina. A fast five straight points stretched the lead to nine and hit double digits after Collins knocked down a jumper to push the score to 10, 33-23. The Seahawks led by as many as 18 the rest of the half before settling at 16 at the break (57-41).

Salve Regina continued to click over the opening three and a half minutes of the second as the lead expanded to 28 (69-41) after a 12-0 run finished off by a layup from senior Andrew Bronstein (Needham, Mass.). Stewart nailed a triple to make the margin 28, but another 5-0 spurt pushed the score to 74-44.  The Seahawks led by as many as 31 in the final 20 minutes before ending the contest with a 96-71 score.  

Curry will wrap up the season on Saturday, February 22 at Endicott College. Tip-off is set for 3:00 p.m. Salve Regina returns home to host the Wentworth Institute of Technology on Saturday at 3:00 p.m.
