Men's Basketball Tripped Up at UNE

BIDDEFORD, Maine – The Curry College men's basketball team suffered a 98-79 setback to the University of New England on Tuesday night in a Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) contest at the Harold Alfond Forum.

Junior Alex Kravchuk (Mansfield, Conn.) netted a game-high 30 points and was one of two Nor'easter student-athletes to score double-digits. UNE improved to 13-9 overall and 7-6 in CCC play, while the Colonels fell to 5-17 and 1-12.

The Nor'easters forced Curry into 13 turnovers and held a 25-12 advantage in points scored off turnovers.

UNE jumped out to an early 6-0 lead and maintained a 13-11 margin with 14:54 to play in the opening half, before the Nor'easters reeled off 14 straight points to take a 27-11 lead. UNE did not relinquish the lead for the final 29 minutes of action. The home team led would reach as many as 31 in the opening half, before taking a 59-31 cushion into the beak.  

After the Nor'easters built an 80-52 advantage on a dunk by freshman Siddiq Canty (Dallas, Texas) with 10:23 remaining in regulation, the Colonels rattled off a 13-0 run to trim the deficit to 19 (82-63, 6:31 left). Curry would get as close as 16 in the closing moments and would see the margin being pushed back to 24 before settling at 19 in the 98-79 final.

Kravchuk was 12-for-18 from the floor and 4-for-5 from the line to go with 13 rebounds, three assists, and two steals for UNE, while Canty dropped in 18 points, eight boards, two steals and a rejection in 27 minutes of action.

Freshman Angelo Sardegna (Lutz, Fla.) paced the Colonels with a season-high 23 points (9-for-16 from the floor, 5-for-6 from three) along with three rebounds and four assists. Senior Daymeann Stewart (Milwaukee, Wis.) pitched in 18 points, five boards, three assists, and one steal while freshman Michael Ashley (Atlanta, Ga.) contributed his second-straight double-double with 16 points and 12 caroms to go with three assists and a block.

Curry returns to action at home against Nichols College on Saturday, February 15 at 3:00 p.m. on Senior Day. Prior to the contest, the Colonels will honor its five seniors in a pregame ceremony. The University of New England travels to Western New England University for its next game on Saturday at 3:00 p.m.
