MILTON, Mass. – The Curry College men's basketball team fell by a 100-61 final to Western New England University on Saturday afternoon in a Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) bout at Katz Gymnasium.

Junior Alex Sikorski (Rocky Hill, Conn.) notched a team-high 18 points to go along with three rebounds, two assists, and a block for the visiting Golden Bears (14-8 overall, 9-4 CCC). Classmate Zachary Tavitian (Milford, Conn.) tallied 17 points on 8-for-12 shooting, eight boards, one assist, and a block. Senior Tim Reilly (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) registered 14 points, four caroms, eight assists, two steals, and a block. Senior Nick Degennaro (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) recorded 13 points while sophomore Kenny Flynn (Dudley, Mass.) pitched in 13 points off the bench.

Freshman Michael Ashley (Atlanta, Ga.) led the Colonels (5-16 overall, 1-11 CCC) with a double-double of 18 points on 9-for-18 shooting and 10 rebounds, along with four assists, and two steals. Classmate Angelo Sardegna (Lutz, Fla.) chipped in 15 points, four boards, two assists, and one steal while senior Daymeann Stewart (Milwaukee, Wis.) finished with 12 points to go along with three rebounds, five assists, and a steal.

Western New England, which outrebounded Curry 48-30 and held a 46-30 scoring advantage in the paint, also helped its own cause by forcing 14 turnovers that resulted in 14 points. The Golden Bears shot 47 percent in the first half but heated up to finish at 56 percent in the second. In all, the WNEU bench tallied 32 points to 10 for the Colonels.

The teams were close over the opening eight minutes with Curry within five after an Ashley jumper (16-11) seven-plus minutes in. But the Golden Bears followed with a 9-0 run sparked by three straight points from Flynn and back-to-back threes from Reilly and sophomore Antonio Brancato (Fairfield, Conn.) to open up a 14-point advantage with 8:52 to go in the first half. The Colonels hung around and went on a 12-2 spurt to trim the deficit to four, 27-23, with 4:01 remaining. Western New England then closed the half on a 17-5 run to carry a 44-28 advantage into the break.

The Golden Bears continued to click over the opening five minutes of the second as the lead expanded to 21 (57-36) after a Tavitian layup. Curry was able to cut the deficit to 16 in the final 20 minutes but eventually saw the margin increase to as many as 40 before finishing with the 39-point defeat, 100-61.

Curry will next play at the University of New England on Tuesday, February 11 at 7:30 p.m. Western New England remains on the road and will head to Nichols College on Tuesday for a 7:30 p.m. start.
