MILTON, Mass. – The Curry College men's basketball team dropped a 93-65 contest to Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) opponent Endicott College on Wednesday night at the Katz Gymnasium.
Freshman Jalen Echevarria (Lynn, Mass.) shot 8-for-9 from the floor and 4-for-5 three-point range to lead the Gulls (11-4 overall, 5-1 CCC) with 20 points, 12 of which came in the first half. Senior Keith Brown (Pelham, N.H.) filled up the stat sheet with a near triple-double with 18 points, 12 rebounds, eight assists, while adding two blocks in only 29 minutes.
The remainder of the Endicott starters finished in double figures. Junior Matt McDevitt (Cumberland, Maine) tallied 17, sophomore Billy Arseneault (Lynnfield, Mass.) pitched in 15, while junior Jordan Pettway (Bridgeport, Conn.) closed the contest with 14 points.
Freshman Angelo Sardegna (Lutz, Fla.) paced the Colonels (4-11 overall, 0-6 CCC) with 16 points on 6-for-11 shooting. Senior Daymeann Stewart (Milwaukee, Wis.) followed with 14 points, five rebounds, four assists, and a steal.
The Gulls came out in attack mode and quickly rolled up an 8-2 lead to start the game. Echevarria netted the first five points while McDevitt capped things off with his first trey of the contest.
Curry eventually got going as Sardegna and Stewart accounted for 10 of their team's first 12 points. After the squads traded baskets, Endicott would embark on a 23-3 run to build the advantage to 40-17 with 5:50 to go in the half. The lead reached 26 following a made layup by junior Griffin Curtis (Salem, N.H.). The Colonels came back with a 12-0 on four straight three-pointers, two apiece from sophomore Orlando Ashford (Stamford, Conn.) and freshman Cecil Villa (Springfield, Mass.) to trim the 20-plus point margin down to 14 as the Colonels cut the lead at the half to 49-35.
Curry would be as close as 12 in the second stanza. Senior Jared Thorpe-Johnson (Dorchester, Mass.) opened the scoring in the period with a layup to make the score 49-37, but Endicott went on an 18-0 spurt to open up a 30-point lead, 67-37, with 15:40 remaining in regulation.
The Gulls led by as many as 35 points in the second half. The Colonels were able to trim the deficit to as close as 26, but Endicott kept the stranglehold on the game to come away with the 93-65 final.
Curry will next play at Nichols College on Saturday, January 18 at 3:00 p.m. Endicott returns to action at Roger Williams University on Saturday at 3:00 p.m.
