Men's Basketball Drops CCC Contest to Wentworth

MILTON, Mass. – The Curry College men's basketball team fell to the visiting Wentworth Institute of Technology in a 66-49 final on Tuesday night in Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) action at the Katz Gymnasium.

Sophomore Kevin Fernandez (Lawrence, Mass.) led all scorers with 17 points and chipped in three rebounds, one assist, and a block for the Leopards (10-3 overall, 3-1 CCC).  Freshman Jack Schaake (Hampton, N.H.) tallied 12 points, six boards, and two assists as the only other Wentworth student-athlete in double figures scoring.

The Colonels (4-8 overall, 0-3 CCC) received 15 points, seven rebounds, three assists and two steals from senior Daymeann Stewart (Milwaukee, Wis.). Classmate Jared Thorpe-Johnson followed with 14 points, eight caroms, and one assist.  

Wentworth jumped out to a 28-6 lead, a spurt that was capped off by a dunk from Trey Carrier (Wilton, N.H.). The Leopards extended their lead to as much as 28 before Stewart knocked down a jumper to trim the halftime deficit to 24, 34-10. Fernandez led all scorers at the break with seven points.

Curry rallied in the second stanza, slowly chipping away at the Wentworth lead before pulling within 17 on a Thorpe-Johnson triple jumper with 1:27 to go in the game. The margin was too much to overcome for the Colonels as the contest ended the 66-49 final.

Curry will wrap up a three-game homestand on Thursday, January 9 as they host league opponent the University of New England at 7:30 p.m. Wentworth returns home to host Salve Regina University for a conference tilt at on Thursday 7:30 p.m.
