Men's Basketball Rallies Late to Take Down Lions in Non-Conference Finale

MILTON, Mass. – The Curry College men's basketball team dispatched former conference foe Eastern Nazarene College by a 69-62 final on Saturday afternoon at Katz Gymnasium.

Senior Daymeann Stewart (Milwaukee, Wis.) shot 7-for-19 from the floor to finish with 19 points, which tied a game-high with freshman Angelo Sardgegna (Lutz, Fla.). Senior Jared Thorpe-Johnson (Dorchester, Mass.) registered a double-double of 11 points and 13 rebounds. Senior Noah Cheney (Bend, Ore.) led the Lions with 16 points. Junior David Lopez (Miami, Fla.) rounded out the Eastern Nazarene scorers in double figures with 11 points.

The Colonels started the game hot, scoring the first seven points. The Lions responded with a run of their own to its first lead of the game, 17-16, following two successful free throws from Cheney with 8:11 remaining in the opening half. Neither team led by more than four during the rest of the stanza as Curry entered the half with a slim 33-32 advantage at halftime.

Eastern Nazarene came out of the locker room and scored the first six points of the half on back-to-back triples from Cheney and senior Garrett Crandell (Bristol, Tenn.) to grab a 38-33 lead. The Colonels would go on to erase the Lions' largest lead, which would be built to eight on a made jumper by junior Ozzy Trail III (Valley Stream, N.Y.) to make the score 52-44 with 10:22 remaining in regulation. Curry swiftly cut the deficit to two on back-to-back threes from Sardegna. The Colonels regained the advantage with 3:38 left on a layup by Stewart and would close the contest on an 11-2 run in the final moments to capture the seven-point victory, 69-62.

Curry (4-7 overall) resumes conference play at home against the Wentworth Institute of Technology on Tuesday, January 7 at 7:30 p.m. Eastern Nazarene (4-8 overall) opens league action on Wednesday, January 8 at home against Becker College. Tip-off is set for 7:00 p.m.
