Men's Basketball Closes Out 2019 With Setback to Bridgewater in Consolation Game of the Tournament of Heroes

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. – The Curry College men's basketball suffered a 76-67 loss to Bridgewater College (Va.) in the Consolation Game of the Tournament of Heroes on Saturday afternoon at the Tank.

Senior Davrion Grier (Charlotte, N.C.) led the Eagles (5-7 overall) with a near double-double of 19 points and nine rebounds, including an 8-for-10 performance from the floor while adding five assists, one steal and three blocks. Sophomore Liam Caswell (Ocracoke Island, N.C.) added 17 points on 6-for-14 shooting and went 3-for-6 from beyond the arc. Junior Will Bowser (Raleigh, N.C.) also finished in double figures with 16 points, four boards, and five assists off the bench.

Senior Daymeann Stewart (Milwaukee, Wis.) paced the Colonels (3-7 overall) with 14 points while classmate Jared Thorpe-Johnson (Dorchester, Mass.) chipped in 11 points and nine rebounds. Freshman Angelo Sardegna (Lutz, Fla.) registered 10 points to go with seven boards and two assists.

After trailing by four in the early going, Curry used an 11-0 run which was capped off by back-to-back triples from senior Spencer Feng (Keene, N.H.) to give the Colonels an 17-10 advantage. Bridgewater answered back with a 20-5 spurt, finished off by a layup from Bowser to make the score 33-30 with 3:45 to go in the first stanza. The Eagles were able to remain on top for much of the time left in the half and carried a 43-37 lead into the break. Caswell led all scorers with 11 points at intermission while Thorpe-Johnson supplied nine. 

Curry came out of the locker room at the half and scored the first six points to knot the contest at 43 after a layup from Thorpe-Johnson. Neither team led by more than three until there was under five minutes left of regulation. Following two made free throws by Stewart to give the Colonels a 61-60 lead, Bridgewater netted 10 in a row to make the score 70-61 with 3:22 remaining.

Curry got to within seven in the waning moments, but ultimately fell by the nine-point margin, 76-67.  

Curry returns home and will next host Eastern Nazarene College on Saturday, January 4 at 3:00 p.m. Bridgewater (Va.) will also play at home on January 4 against league opponent Ferrum College at 2:00 p.m.
