Men's Basketball Edged in Overtime at Newbury in Season Opener, 107-100

MILTON, Mass. – After a comeback in the final six minutes of regulation, the Curry College men's basketball team came up short in overtime and lost 107-100 to Newbury College at Pappas Gymnasium on Saturday afternoon in the season opener for the Colonels.

Curry trailed by nine with 5:59 to play in regulation but outscored the Nighthawks 21-12 to send the game into extra time. Alex Stein (Mount Olive, N.J.) was responsible for five points during the stretch, including the game-tying three with three seconds remaining. The Colonels carried the momentum into overtime and would knot the contest at 97 with 1:43 remaining on a three-pointer by A. Stein. Newbury closed the contest on a 10-3 run to capture the game by a seven-point margin for the win.

Jared Thorpe-Johnson (Dorchester, Mass.) led the Colonels with 30 points, seven rebounds, and three assists. Louis Stein (Mount Olive, N.J.) and Mackenzie Purry (Jackson, N.J.) finished with 20 and 11 points, respectively. A. Stein pitched in 14 points off the bench to round out the Curry players in double figures.

Newbury's Omar Williams (Queens, N.Y.) led all scorers with 44 points while adding three rebounds, seven assists, and two steals. Pierce Weatherspoon (Hartford, Conn.) poured in 37 points as the Nighthawks shot just under 52 percent as a team and went 10-for-20 from long range.

Curry (0-1 overall) will next host Regis College on Tuesday, November at 6:00 p.m. for its home opener. Newbury (2-0 overall) returns to action on Tuesday as they host Clark University at 7:00 p.m.
