Men's Basketball Tripped Up By Salve Regina in Conference Play, 75-54

 

MILTON, Mass. – The Curry College men's basketball team lost a 75-54 decision to Salve Regina University on Saturday afternoon Commonwealth Coast Conference play at the Katz Gymnasium.

Isaiah Bowman (Roxbury, Mass.) led all scorers with 23 points and added four rebounds to pace the Seahawks, who improved to 9-12 overall and 6-8 in the CCC. Jared Thorpe-Johnson (Dorchester, Mass.) led the Colonels in the scoring department with 22 points off the bench.

Salve Regina opened the game on a 15-3 run, capped off by a Rodney Morton (Malden, Mass.) layup and Kevin Mannix (Barrington, R.I.) jumper. The lead would eventually hit 20 when Morton knocked down his third of three straight free throws to make the score 35-15 with 4:09 to go in the first half. Thorpe-Johnson knocked down back-to-back shots for the Colonels, but the Seahawks closed the first stanza on a 10-4 run to carry a 45-21 lead into the intermission.

Curry was able to cut into the deficit in as few as 16 when Spencer Feng (Keene, N.H.) converted on a three-pointer to make the score 62-46 with 8:25 remaining in regulation. The lead quickly ballooned to 20-plus points as the final score would eventually be a 21-point margin.

Salve Regina shot 54.8 percent in the first half and then put up a 39.3 shooting percentage in the second, going 1-for-9 from long range in the final half. The Colonels shot 41 percent as the teams finished in a tie for rebounds, grabbing 33 each.

Curry (1-20, 1-13 CCC) will next host Western New England University on Wednesday, February 7 at 5:30 p.m. Salve Regina returns to action on Wednesday when they host Nichols at 7:30 p.m.
