Men's Basketball Topped By Roger Williams in CCC Play, 93-69

MILTON, Mass. –  Four Hawks scored in double figures as Roger Williams University posted a 93-69 victory at Curry College on Saturday afternoon at the Katz Gymnasium. The win pushes the Hawks to 9-2 overall with a 3-1 mark in the Commonwealth Coast Conference while the Colonels drop to 1-11 overall and 0-5 in league play.

Austin Coene (Tyngsborough, Mass.) shot 10-for-14 including 2-for-2 from three-point range to lead Roger Williams with 25 points, 18 of which came in the first half. Nick Marini (Loudonville, N.Y.) filled up the stat sheet with 21 points, five rebounds, five assists and two steals in only 26 minutes. Conor O'Brien (Sharon, Mass.) was the final starter in double figures with 10 points while also chipping in eight rebounds, two steals and five blocks. Jeff Stockmal (Shelton, Conn.) was the leading scorer off the bench with 11 points on 5-for-8 shooting.

Jared Thorpe-Johnson (Dorchester, Mass.) led Curry with 23 points on 9-for-13 shooting. Nick George (Rockland, Mass.) was the other Colonel in double figures, chipping in 15 points and five rebounds off the bench.

The Hawks came out in attack mode and built a 14 point lead nearly halfway through the first stanza, 31-17. Curry closed the gap to as five before the end of the first half, but the lead would be sent back to double digits. The deficit reached as many as 17 before Thorpe-Johnson knocked down a triple with nine seconds to go in the first to cut the margin to 14 heading into the locker room, 49-35.

The lead for Roger Williams quickly ballooned in the second half, reaching 30 when Coene converted on a three-point shot with 14:51 to go, 67-37. The Hawks would continue their strong play, limiting Curry to 34 points while the road team put up 44 points and shot 52.8 percent from the floor in the final stanza. The Colonels were able to pull to within as close as 24 as the buzzer sounded with the final score of 93-69.

Curry will next play at home on Tuesday, January 9 when they welcome in Nichols for a 7:30 p.m. tip. Roger Williams returns to action at Salve Regina on Tuesday, January 9 at 7:30 p.m.
