Men's Basketball Clipped By Maine Maritime in Non-Conference Finale, 84-73

MILTON, Mass. – The Curry College men's basketball dropped its non-conference finale, falling to Maine Maritime Academy on Tuesday night at the Katz Gymnasium in Milton, 84-73. With the win, the Mariners improve to 1-10 overall while the Colonels dip to 1-9.

Maine Maritime had five players score in double figures led by Adam Richardson (Bradley, Maine) and Nicholas DePatsy (Waldoboro, Maine) who 17 points apiece. Tyler Thayer (Mermon, Maine) and Brendan Newcomb (Holden Maine) added 15 and 12 points, respectively while Riley Jorgenson (Vienna, Va.) pitched in a double-double of 10 points and 10 rebounds in 31 minutes of action.

Leading Curry were Jared Thorpe-Johnson (Dorchester, Mass.) and Louis Stein (Las Vegas, Nev.), as they each put up 17 points. Justin Kelley (Medford, Mass.) was the second leading scorer off the bench with 15 points on six-for-eight shooting while adding three rebounds. Jason Logue (Alamonte Springs, Fla.) finished with nine points, one rebound and two assists in his debut for the Colonels. Six other Curry student-athletes scored to round out the scoring for the home team.

The Mariners jumped out to an early seven-point lead as Jorgenson knocked down a jumper to make the score 9-2 with 15:44 left in the first.

After a good free throw by Nick George (Rockland, Mass.) cut the deficit to three, Maine Maritime would close the half strong on an 8-0 run over the final 3:22 of the first half to send the Mariners into the locker room with an 11-point lead at 42-31.

The lead ballooned to as many as 17 in the second half and would get to within seven with 2:43 to go in regulation after a layup by George. Maine Maritime outscored Curry 8-5 over the final 2:12 to take the contest by an 11-point margin. It was a hot-shooting night for the Mariners as they shot 50.9 percent (28-for-55) from the floor and went 9-for-25 from beyond the arc. Curry shot 24-for-59 (40.7 percent) from the field and 34.6 percent (10-for-29) from three.

Curry will return to the court on Wednesday, January 2 when they travel to Salve Regina for a 7:00 p.m. conference contest. Maine Maritime will next play host Husson on Saturday, January 6 at 3:00 p.m.
