Men's Basketball Closes Out First Semester With Loss to Emerson, 88-66

MILTON, Mass. – The Curry College men's basketball team dropped an 88-66 non-league contest to visiting Emerson College on Saturday afternoon at the Katz Gymnasium. The win pushes the Lions to 6-3 while the Colonels slip to 1-8.

Geoffrey Gray (Newton, Mass.) scored a game-high 27 points to lead Emerson. Jack O'Connor (Newport, R.I.)  added 17 points, four rebounds and two assists while Michael Sheng (Altadena, Calif.) closed out the Lions in double-figures with 16.

Kieran Carroll (Greenwich, Conn.) netted a game-high 24 points and 10 rebounds on 10-for-15 shooting to pace Curry. Jared Thorpe-Johnson (Dorchester, Mass.) pitched in 21 points off the bench, knocking down 6-for-8 shots from the floor, including 4-for-5 from distance. He was also a perfect 5-for-5 from the free throw line in 22 minutes. RJ Hadfield (Warwick, R.I.) was the third-leading scorer with seven points off the bench.

An early 8-0 run over a two minute span gave Emerson the early lead, 14-6 with 16:17 left in the first half. The Curry deficit reached 11 when Gray converted on a layup with 9:35 to go in the opening staza. The Colonels kept fighting in the contest, cutting the lead to as few as five when Carroll connected on a layup to make the score 32-27 with 6:35 to go. The lead quickly ballooned to double figures, reaching as many as 14 when Sheng make a layup with 1:03 to go. The Colonels got on the board once more when Carroll hit a layup as the Lions would carry a 46-34 advantage into the break.

The deficit reached 20 in the opening moments of the second half when O'Connor converted on a three to make the score 66-46. Sheng knocked down a three just 30 seconds later. Curry was able to cut the Emerson lead to as few as 20 over the final moments of the second half as the Lions would take the contest by the 20 point margin, 86-66.

Curry will next play at home against Maine Maritime on Tuesday, January 2 at 6:00 p.m. Emerson returns to action at Lesley University on Tuesday at 8:00 p.m.
