Men's Basketball Tripped Up By Wentworth in CCC Opener, 58-49

MILTON, Mass. – The Curry College men's basketball team dropped its Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) opener to the visiting Wentworth Institute of Technology on Wednesday night at the Katz Gymnasium by a 58-49 final. The win moves the Leopards to 3-2 overall and 1-0 in the CCC while the Colonels slip to 1-5 overall and 0-1 in league action.

 Wentworth took a one-point lead into the halftime intermission and outscored Curry 32-24 in the second half, to take the game by a nine-point margin. Jason Ganley (Northbridge, Mass) scored all of his game-high 20 points in the second half and added eight rebounds in the win. Stephen Azums (Hyde Park, Mass.) was the only other Leopard in double figures with 12 and eight rebounds.

 Curry was led by 15 points from Kieran Carroll (Greenwich, Conn.). He also put up nine rebounds to lead that category. Spencer Feng (Keene, N.H.) pitched in 11 points, two rebounds and two assists off the bench. Akhari Goodridge (Cambridge, Mass.) tallied nine points three rebounds, two assists, and three steals.

Wentworth jumped out to the early lead, nearly 10 minutes into the contest, with their lead reaching eight when with 8:41 left in the first half when Azums converted on a layup to make the score 21-13. The Colonels started to chip away at the deficit and would go into the locker room at the half trailing by one (26-25) after Feng knocked down a three with 35 seconds to go in the first stanza.

The lead would change hands a few times over the first five minutes before either team could grab the advantage. With 7:22 remaining in regulation, Ganley hit a layup to put the Leopards up by seven at 49-42. A quick 7-0 run sparked by a Carroll layup, a three from Barak Swarttz (Newton, Mass.) and a jumper from Goodridge tied the game at 49 with 5:07 left. The Leopards responded with an 8-0 run over the final 4:47 to take the contest by a nine-point margin.

Curry will continue CCC play on Saturday when they travel to Endicott for a 3:00 p.m. start. Wentworth will return to the court on Saturday when they host Eastern Nazarene at 3:00 p.m.
