Men's Basketball Suffers a 77-38 Loss at Conference Foe Roger Williams

BRISTOL, R.I. - The Roger Williams University Men's Basketball team defeated the Curry College Colonels 77-38 Tuesday evening in Commonwealth Coast Conference competition.

A won tip-off by the Roger Williams Hawks foreshadowed the Hawks' possession in the first half of the game. A slow start to the game quickly picked up for Roger Williams at 18:08 with a shot made by Austin Coene (Tyngsborough, Mass.). Coene's shot began a 12-point run for the Hawks.

The run was broken by two free throws made by Ryan Beatty (Rochester, Mass.) at 13:08 to give Curry their first points of the game, the score now 2-12. A layup by Tim Flanagan (Providence, R.I.) at 11:58 sparked some energy as it brought on a six-point run for the Colonels after going 0-for-5 from the field.

A tip-in by Jaylen Jennings at 8:47 allowed the Hawks to move up 20-10. Free throws allowed for Curry to make up some points, while a three-point shot by Alex Paul (Brooklyn, N.Y.) at 6:47 allowed the Colonels to pull within six (17-23), their closest point deficit since 17:35.

However, the unmatched Roger Williams offense proved to be too much for Curry. A shot by Josh McCourt (Lincoln, R.I.) at 3:42 set off the Hawks for a six-point run. The Colonels were unable to make a shot after 6:47 and went 0-for-10 for the remainder of the half. The clock wound down and a tip-in by Josh Syska (Peabody, Mass.) just before the buzzer gave Roger William a firm 18-point lead, 39-21.

Roger Williams continued their strong offensive position in the second half. A tip-in at 15:38 by Paul Preziosi (Quincy, Mass.) gave the Colonels their first shot of the half after going 0-for-8. Back and forth baskets persisted as the game clock counted down.

The Hawks continued to maintain its comfortable lead over Curry, taking a 55-31 over the Colonels with ten minutes remaining. Both teams struggled to make a basket until Luke Schreiner's (Breezy Point, N.Y.) three-pointer at 8:49. Roger Williams followed up with a shot made by Coene just 16 seconds after. His shot began a seven-point run for the Roger Williams offense.

The run was broken at 5:02 with a layup by James Pina (Warwick, R.I.) to bring the score up 36-62. The Colonels continued to struggle to make baskets for the next few minutes until their final successful shot of the game at 1:59 by Preziosi.

The clock counted down and Roger Williams asserted their offensive dominance with a 77-36 victory over the Colonels.

McCourt had 18 points for the Hawks, while Coene had 16 points. Trevor Fahmy put up another strong defensive front with ten rebounds and three blocks.

Schreiner put up nine points for Curry College, while Flanagan put up eight. Preziosi had the best defensive game for the Colonels with six rebounds under the hoop.

On Saturday, both teams will wrap up the regular season. Roger Williams (10-14, 8-9 CCC) will travel to Boston to meet Wentworth at 3:00pm. Curry College (0-24, 0-17 CCC) will host Gordon at 3:00pm.  (Game Recap Courtesy of Roger Williams Sports Information)
