Men's Basketball Notches First CCC Win, Defeating Salve Regina, 71-67

NEWPORT, R.I. - Senior guard Antonio Jones (Dorchester, Mass.) made Curry College's only field goal in the final five minutes of the Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) men's basketball contest, but the Colonels made enough free throws to hold off Salve Regina University for a 71-67 triumph at the Rodgers Recreation Center. Jones finished with a game-high 17 points as Curry improved to 3-12 overall while winning its first league game of the season (1-7).

Salve Regina slipped to 4-11 overall and 1-7 in CCC play.

The Seahawks took a brief second-half lead when freshman Bryce Boggs (Hyde Park, Mass.) got loose on a fastbreak and dunked at 2:55 for a 61-60 edge. Jones' free throws regained the lead for the Colonels on the next possession.

Sophomore forward Nicholas Bates (Danvers, Mass.) hit a 3-pointer just as the clock ticked under 30 seconds to play to draw Salve Regina within two, 67-65. Senior guard Jordan Vieira (Marbella, Spain) sank two free throws before Boggs' layup made it a two-point game with 14 seconds left.

Sophomore guard Stephen O'Neal (Roxbury, Mass.) made another pair from the charity stripe as the Colonels outscored the Seahawks, 24 to 12, from the free-throw line.

The game started with Curry senior forward Matt Russell (South Portland, Maine) hitting a jumper in the paint. Salve Regina took its largest lead after a 7-0 run included layups from ! Ba tes, Boggs, and graduate student Scott St. Lawrence (Litchfield, N.H.).

These two programs played a pair of overtime games in the 2013-14 season, with Salve Regina winning both. The largest margin in the first half was six points until the Colonels enjoyed an 8-0 run over three minutes (4:41 down to 1:36) for a 36-26 advantage.

Sophomore forward James Pina (Warwick, R.I.) led all players at the break with 10 first-half points.

Junior guard Chris O'Keefe (Lexington, Mass.), who scored a basket in both halves, had a driving layup early in the second and then grabbed a defensive rebound before feeding freshman forward  Adam Quinlan (E. Walpole, Mass.) for another Seahawk layup.

Quinlan's jumper brought the Seahawks within four, 42-38, at 15:22. Jones and Vieira both had jumpers and Russell had a tip-in during a 9-2 run that gave Curry its largest lead of the game, 51-40, at 11:54.

Junior forward Brenden Fowler (No. Attleboro, Mass.) scored seven of his team-high 14 points during a seven-minute stretch when Salve Regina outscored the visitors, 18-9.

Both teams had three players each in double-figure scoring. Pina had 16, Vieira had 11 to join Jones in double digits for the Colonels. Boggs matched Fowlers' total with 14 points and Bates finished with 13 points.

Salve Regina outrebounded Curry, 40 to 26, with eight boards for Boggs pacing the Seahawks.
