Kylerr Bucano has taken the idea of community involvement to another level during his time at Curry College.  From day one on campus, the criminal justice major from the Bronx, New York dove right into everything Curry has to offer.

"It just felt right when I came onto the Curry College campus.  The people I met during Orientation were so friendly and our class became this big, close-knit group of friends once the first semester started. It made it so easy to get involved here."

And get involved he did.  Kylerr has been the treasurer of the Sociology Club, president of the Criminal Justice Honor Society and also works as a residence assistant in one of the larger residence halls on campus.  As an RA, he takes pride in mentoring younger students who may be having a tough time adjusting to college life for the first time.

"I know how it feels to be homesick.  I had the same feelings when I went to prep school for the first time.  My advice to them is always to get away from your room and your smartphone and get out on campus and get involved.  Go to the student center, join a club, because once you get involved and start meeting people, it gets so much better."

Helping others seems to be embedded in Kylerr's DNA; it's the reason he chose criminal justice as his major.  It's also why he donates his time to Big Brothers Big Sisters of Massachusetts Bay, mentoring a student from the nearby Holland School in Dorchester.

"As a college student, I want to share my experiences with a Little Brother," says Kylerr. "I think it's very important that every kid have someone to look up to."

During the summer months Kylerr volunteers his time back in his native South Bronx volunteering for SoBro, a non-profit organization whose mission is to strengthen businesses and create innovative economic, housing, educational, and career development programs for youth and adults.

And just when you thought Kylerr couldn't add anything else to his plate, he minors in communication, holds a 3.9 GPA and is captain of the Curry College basketball team.  He also plans on attending graduate school after completing his undergraduate degree at Curry.

"Curry College has been so rewarding.  Even though I love it here, I can't wait for graduation.  When my parents and my grandmother see me walk across that stage, with my diploma, my Criminal Justice Honor Society medal, and hopefully a summa cum laude tassel, they're going to be so proud of me."
