Men's Basketball Knocked Off by Ninth-Ranked WPI, 94-72, in Non-Conference Action

MILTON, Mass. – Curry College was topped by the #9 nationally-ranked WPI Engineers, 94-72, in non-conference men's basketball action Tuesday night in Milton. WPI improved to 2-0 on the season, while the Colonels fell to 0-2 overall.

WPI went on a 22-12 run over the opening 6:41 of the first period. The run began after senior Ryan Kolb (Southington, Conn.) scored the first basket of the game with a made three-pointer and was capped off with a layup by freshman Luis Gracia (Springfield, Mass.). The Engineers entered intermission with a 23-point lead (55-32) following a shot from beyond the arc, a foul and a made free throw by junior Domenick Mastacusa (North Reading, Mass.).

The Colonels rallied midway through the second frame with an 11-4 run, trimming the deficit to 14 (74-60) with 6:26 remaining in regulation. Freshman Rodney Beldo (Dorchester, Mass.) started the run with a three-point play with 9:53 on the clock and later capped it off with a pair from the charity stripe. WPI secured the victory by scoring 20 of the game's final 34 points.

Junior Sam Longwell (Acton, Mass.) led the Engineers with 22 points and a game-high 11 rebounds to record the double-double, while Kolb chipped in with 21 points. Mastacusa and sophomore Zach Karalis (North Andover, Mass.) added 20 and 17, respectively.

Curry was led by senior Lambros Papalambros with a team-high 22 points on 10-13 (76.9%) shooting, while also recording a game-high four steals. Beldo added 20 points, while junior Matt Russell (South Portland, Maine) pulled down a team-best six rebounds.

WPI returns to action on Thursday, hosting Salem State for a 7:00 p.m. non-conference contest. The Colonels resume play on Saturday at 1:00 p.m. for a non-conference game against visiting M.I.T.
