Last-Second Three-Pointer By Mastrullo Lifts MBB Past Salve Regina, 60-57
MILTON, Mass. – Curry’s Mark Mastrullo (Billerica, MA) buried a three-pointer from mid-court as time expired, lifting the Colonels to a 60-57 win over Salve Regina in The Commonwealth Coast Conference (TCCC) action Tuesday night in Milton. Curry improves to 11-10 overall and 8-2 in TCCC play while the Seahawks fall to 4-18 overall and 3-7 in TCCC play.

Salve Regina led for the entire first half. A layup by sophomore forward Austin Hall (Coventry, CT) with 4:55 remaining gave the Seahawks their biggest lead of the opening frame (24-11). The Colonels battled back and went on an 11-0 run, sparked by a three-pointer from senior forward Philippe Jourdain (Cambridge, MA) with 4:36 left before intermission. The run was then capped off with a free throw by junior guard Michael D'Amato (Redding, CT) with seven seconds remaining, pulling Curry within two (24-22). Salve’s Jabreche Boyd (West Haven, CT) ended the Colonels’ run and sent his team to the locker room with a 27-22 edge by hitting a three-point buzzer beater.

The Seahawks built their biggest lead of the game at 14:43 of the second after freshman guard Trey Scales (Boston, MA) hit a three-pointer that put his team ahead by 15 points (42-27). Curry chipped away over the next 10 minutes, and took its first lead of the game (51-49) at 4:55 on a layup by junior center Rodney Bennett (Mattapan, MA). At 57-56 with six seconds remaining, junior forward Dan Royce (Mahwah, NJ) sank a free throw tied the game. After a timeout, Mastrullo took the inbounds pass, launched the half-court shot at the buzzer, and gave the hosts a thrilling come-from-behind and last-second victory.

Bennett scored a team-high 15 points. He was followed by sophomore guard Jarrell Jackson (Brockton, MA) who contributed 13 points. Jourdain was the Colonels top rebounder with eight boards.

Boyd led all scorers with 22 points. Royce and Scales chipped in with 13 points apiece. Royce and Boyd notched double-doubles with 13 and 10 rebounds, respectively.

Curry returns to action on Thursday, February 11 for a 7 p.m. non-conference road game at Salem State. Salve Regina travels to Endicott for a 3 p.m. contest on Saturday, February 13.
